Summary: They're old and gray.
When they're old and gray they look back on their crime fighting days with a certain fondness.
Sure, Derek still moans and sweats in his sleep, fighting evil men, protecting innocent children. And Spencer still finds himself wasted on the young freshman's the local college. But it's their life together and they love it.
They still talk to the team every once in a while. No one really likes to talk anymore.
Not since Hotch.
Garcia still emails Derek once a month, baby pictures you know. But not quite babies anymore.
Teenagers. Children grow as fast as they did.
Spencer doesn't like to think of how old they are now. Nor does he like to look in the mirror and see himself old and gray but he loves looking at Derek and seeing the gray whiskers that brush across his cheek.
They've had a good life. They've had each other.
Derek's family embraced Spencer more than either suspected, happy to have someone love their son and brother as much as they did.
Spencer's mother passed on his 45 birthday, and it was hard. But he had a dark shoulder that was ready and willing to be used as a pillow. And it was, for two straight weeks.
Someone Spencer dreams of the days when his brilliant mind and his lover's brilliant body were helping the innocent. He sometimes wonders if God will forgive them for not doing what they were meant to do.
But when he contemplates what God might be thinking of them, he thinks of Hotch. Their brave leader who gave his wife, son and life to the cause.
It was then, right at the funeral when Derek's arms were whined around his smaller partner that they realized they couldn't do this forever. They could-but they would never have each other, or a normal life.
Spencer leaves the bathroom and the mirror he hated looking in, the kitchen smells of bacon and eggs.
He stops in the doorway and looks at the man he gave everything up for. He knows he'd give up more just to be able to wake up and see the man he loved standing in their kitchen.
He stops when another thought intrudes in his mind. Gideon.
He hasn't thought about his old mentor in years. Hope of seeing the old team leader died when he was absent from Hotch's funeral, any lingering hope of seeing or hearing from him died soon after Hotch.
But Spencer wasn't angry.
He loved his old teammates like the family they once were. But he hated them. He hated looking at them and remembering all the pain he experienced at their sides.
His thoughts are broken when Derek finally notices him.
"You're up late. What's wrong?" Derek's eyes are filled with concern and love.
Spencer smiles, "Nothing," He steps further into the kitchen and gets two plates out.
Derek doesn't believe him and Spencer knows that. But in all honesty, nothing is wrong.
They're old and gray and loving every minute of it.
