Pairing: Kakashi x Rin, implied Kakashi x Obito and Obito x Rin
Rating: T to be safe
Summary: Let's get together and break our hearts.
(Takes place between the Kannabi Bridge Mission and Rin's death.)
She doesn't love him anymore. And he doesn't love her - he never did, but that's okay. Sometimes she wonders if she ever really loved him. But it doesn't matter - it wasn't love that brought them together. Well - not love for each other.
Uchiha Obito. They both love - loved - him, Kakashi and Rin. Rin isn't sure how Kakashi loved him, if it was with a brother's love or something deeper. Obito was Rin's best friend, but sometimes she thinks of him and her heart aches and it hurts to breathe and how she could have loved him. God, how she could have loved him. If only they'd had more time.
She remembers the days, weeks, months, after the funeral. Minato-sensei was busy with the war, and Kakashi… Kakashi buried himself in mission after mission. And Rin was alone in her grief. And when the pain becomes too much, when reality finally sinks in - she will never, never, never see his smile again and it hurts so, so much - she breaks and she falls and Kakashi is there to catch her.
His eye is sad and he looks so old when he watches her. "I promised to take care of you, Rin." There's a heaviness to his voice that wasn't there before, when they were children. They aren't children anymore, not when they've watched Obito - her heart breaks whenever she thinks of him. But how can she stop? He's her everything, he was her everything and now all she knows is grief - die before their eyes, not when they've killed everyone who ever hurt him, when the blood is thick on their hands and in their lungs.
"I promised," Kakashi repeats, and his voice breaks. He takes deep breaths to collect himself, and Rin watches with broken eyes. Kakashi sets his jaw. "Rin. Marry me."
Tears blur her eyes because she's too young for this, too empty and too hurt. She covers her mouth, but she's not quick enough to hide the sobs that come, broken and too loud in the quiet. And Kakashi is there, arms wrapped around her securely, but he doesn't look at her.
"Not now," he whispers. "After the war. When all this is over." And then Kakashi is crying too. "I promised him, Rin. I promised him." And Rin understands.
They're not in love. But God, do they love him.
