Chekov peered into the scanner and read the information again. Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock had beamed down to the planets surface an hour ago leaving Mr. Scott in charge of the bridge and Chekov as the science officer. He liked it this way, sometimes he liked it too much – imagining that he was the first officer and some nameless junior officer reported to him. He smiled to himself as he turned to report his findings to Mr. Scott.
Scotty usually left the crew to do their own thing as he pondered engineering problems and whatever else the Scotsman liked to think about. It was always the same, Scotty would sit in the command chair for about twenty to thirty minutes then he would get restless and begin to prowl the bridge. Not far, usually to the engineering station then over to communications where he would lean against the console and talk to Uhura; which was exactly where Scotty was now.
Except this time something was different. Something Chekov had unconsciously been noticing for a while. Scotty was smiling down at Uhura as she was talking to him. Their conversations of late had gotten… quieter, more intimate.
'Thet is illogical,' Chekov said to himself.
Then Chekov looked at their hands. Scotty was resting his hand on the top of the console and Uhura had hers lying next to his. It wasn't like they were holding hands but their hands were close enough that they were touching.
He turned back to his station and peered into the scanner again. His eyes were closed as he thought about his observations. It was starting to make sense as he remembered events from the past month or so. Scotty and Uhura had been seen taking breaks together, going on shore leave and generally just spending more time together. Chekov had even heard that Scotty was no longer working double shifts in engineering. He wondered who else knew about this.
He glanced over at Sulu and caught his eye. Chekov twisted his head back at Scotty and Uhura as he shrugged at Sulu. Sulu smiled and nodded before he mouthed, "The whole ship is talking about them. Can you believe it?"
Chekov shrugged again and turned away apparently he needed to work on his observation skills. Something he hoped Mr. Spock would not learn about.
