He could ear them. Always, pounding inside his head. He was wondering how he could have missed them for so long.
They appeared after he met this man. No… He was no "man". This being was as far from humankind than Loki was himself. But they had met.
Well… Loki more "fell over him". He could remembered how it had been. He was actually falling through the sky, falling through space. His mind was devastated, his heart was broken and all he wanted was to drown in the infinite universe.
But something caught him. Someone. Someone with something in his eyes. Something so deep, something so… Old. Older than Loki, certainly older than Odin and older than frost giants.
First, the man had looked a bit baffled.
"You're… Pretty weird you know? Old god, new fallen. Poor little thing, how much did they shattered you?"
Then, their eyes had met and something had happened.
Loki had been stuck into those eyes, nearly drowning in them and it looked like the other guy was also stuck in Loki's. Silent fell between them as they looked into each other eyes.
And Loki saw eternity. Absolute, deep and true Eternity. For a second he felt the whole time and space flowing wildly through his head and he thought he was dying. One second after, the other man took Loki's head in his hands almost violently. His eyes were looking deep into the god's soul, like he was looking for something. In a trembling voice he asked.
"Can you hear them? Hell, I know you saw! You saw through me! How did you…? No, no matter how… Tell me! Tell me what did you saw! Tell me what did you felt!"
There was something close to pleading into this creature's voice. Loki was shocked and breathless. He had saw a lot of fight, a lot of wonders but that? He had never been close to something like that. His voice was shaking when he answered this strange creature.
"I saw… I saw everything. I saw my birth, I saw my death. I saw… Fathers, universes, war and peace. I… I don't know what I saw… My destiny, my glory and my fall… Everything since the beginning of time… No!"
Something rushed into his head as he was still trapped into this hazel glance. He stumbled, clenching his fists onto the blond guy's ones. His breath get caught into his throat for a second and he caught a sight of his own hands turning blue. Something was passing through him. This incredible power, all those memories condensed in one single mind, this universal consciousness was just… Pounding into Loki's head. The other man's voice whispered.
"Can you hear them?"
And Loki nodded. How could he have missed it? This rhythm, this four beats rhythm. It was all over the universe, it always had been here and he had never heard it before.
"Yes… Yes I… Can."
The other man's eyes widened as he rested his forehead against Loki's. The blond guy sighed deeply with a profound relief.
"I knew… I always knew I was not mad…"
Loki was still a bit confused but he felt like anyone should after huge revelations. Almost an epiphany.
"I can hear them… I can… Hear them… Everywhere, all over, beating since the beginning of Time… Time… From the middle of Space… Space and Time… Time Lord."
He had whispered those two words like a secret and the man nodded with a smile.
"Yes… Time Lord."
"I can hear the drums…"
"Yes… You can."
