A/N: Hello, everybody! I'm back with a Star Trek fic. The idea just popped into my head while I was re-watching the 2009 movie, so please enjoy!
Disclaimer: Sadly, I do not own Star Trek or any of the characters associated with it.

It was interesting how one second could change everything. How one second could break bonds, end love, start wars. One little second. A small fraction of time. A little sliver that would be remembered forever. One second could alter your destiny. One second could give you a blessing or a curse.

One second isn't much time, but it is also plenty. Plenty of time for human error. Plenty of time to lose someone.

One second was plenty of time to lose your mother.

Spock learned this the hard way.

He remembered the relief he felt as soon as his mother was safe. He remembered the pain as she fell away. He remembered everything about her. She was the one who stood by him through everything. She was the one who never degraded him for the human heritage she gave him. She was the one who never forced him to be logical. She was the one who never made him feel ashamed of showing emotion. Perhaps that was why grief had overtaken him.

"What is it like not to feel anger, or heartbreak, or the need to stop at nothing to avenge the death of the woman who gave birth to you?" Kirk had asked.

How wrong Kirk had been.

"You feel nothing! It must not even compute for you! You never loved her!"

Spock had spent years concealing his emotions. Perhaps that was why it had felt so satisfying to lash out. Years of anger and frustration and pain were unleashed on Kirk, but all Spock could focus on was his dead mother.

Kirk was wrong. Spock felt everything, and he always loved his mother. Always.
