Before They Were House and Cuddy

They had been together, what seemed like a lifetime ago.

It was back in school—back at the University of Michigan—before they graduated. Before they were doctors, back when they were still studying. It was back before he was House and before she was Cuddy.

They were just Greg and Lisa, who had all the time in the world and nothing to worry about except their slowly but steadily approaching graduation.

He was the envy of all the girls on the campus; she was the envy of all the men. And their relationship was the envy of everyone. Both of them knew this well, and used it to their advantage whenever possible.

Which was often, considering that they got into trouble at every turn (as if he didn't get in enough trouble on his own) but never serious enough for the dean to follow through on his threats to expel them both… Just enough for them to earn those threats on a regular basis.

Neither cared, though. They were just having some fun while earning their way to doctorates.

Then, one day, everything changed. The graduation day that had seemed so perpetually far away was finally here. They'd finally made it to the day they thought they'd never reach.

After that day, he was Doctor House and she was Doctor Cuddy—not just Greg and not just Lisa. They had real responsibilities.

And real job offers. She had one on the east coast, in New Jersey. He had one on the west coast, in California. She took hers without so much as consulting him, and moved away to New Jersey. He was left with no choice but to accept the offer given to him, so he did. And he moved to California.

He worked at and was fired from a dozen hospitals all over the country.

She held down her job well and worked her way right up to the top.

Then, one day, with his stained and soiled reputation preceding him, he figuratively showed up on her doorstep. And, that day, remembering the old times they'd shared, she did him a favor.
