The one before me

By Kz77

Yoite and I sit together on my couch. We are cuddled in a blanket. There is no sound. The only thing I can hear is our breath.

"Miharu, did I ever tell you about the Kira user before me?" Yoite says finally. "No, but I would like to." I answer. He smiles. "Very well."

"When I was fourteen, Hattori found me. You already know that much. One day, before I went to live with Yukimi, Hattori said he wanted to go somewhere with me. I had no clue where we were going, but I was surprised to see that he had taken me to a hospital.

"The person you are about to meet is very special. She has been here awhile, and it is important you meet her." He said to me. He parks the car, and we walk to the front desk.

"Hello, how can I help you?" the lady asked us. "Yes, hello, we are looking for Aiko Riki." He says. "She's in room 517. Here are your visitor passes." He thanks her, and we walked to the room.

"Now, son, Aiko is something called a Kira User. A person like that is can be invincible, but there is a cost. Every time you use the Kira, you lose part of your life force. Aiko is dying, and the Grey Wolves need a new Kira User, we've been trying to find a new one." I could see where he was going with this.

"I want to be one." I say. He smiles. "Good, but I still want you to meet Aiko. I want you to see exactly what you are signing up for." He opens the door.

There was a girl lying on a bed. She couldn't have been more then sixteen. She had many tubes in her arms and her hands and feet were brown, cracked, and they looked to be lifeless. She looked at me.

"Hi." She croaked. She barley had a voice. "Hi, Aiko, this is… well, I don't actually know his name, he won't tell me. The point is that he has just told me that he wants to be a Kira user. And, I wanted him to see what happens when you do become one."

"So that's what I've become." She said. Hattori leaves, leaving me with Aiko.

"Listen, kid, get out while you can. Don't become this. Leave the Grey Wolves, and never go back. It isn't worth it. I've lost my touch, taste smell, and I'm losing my eyesight as we speak. This is a horrid thing that I have become, and I have no clue why you would want to become like me. My name isn't even Aiko! They made me change it. My name was Riki Kanuri, but it had to be changed. Whatever they day, do not listen to them. Please, kid. Don't do this."

"Aiko, there is nothing left to me anymore. I wish for this. Death would be good."

"You are already too far gone. I'm sorry. Please, be careful." Those were her last words ever, because she drifted off into the wind, completely dissolved into dust."

I look at him. Tears are streaming out of his eyes. "It was the scariest thing I ever saw. And all I can think about is how that is going to happen to me." He says. I wipe his tears away. "Please, I don't want to talk about that. Come-on, I'll go make some lemon cider.
