"Grandpa?"
"Yes, Elly?"
"Why don't we go on car rides?"
"Because we don't' need cars. We can teleport, remember?"
"But car rides are fun."
John sighed. "Elly, is this your way of saying you want to go for a car ride?"
"Yes, please."
John spent the rest of that day and the next clearing Route 66 and finding them a suitable car. He had wanted to take Elly to California for the winter anyway. They'd be warmer there. This way they'd just have more fun on the way.
John knew the absolute basics of how to drive a car. He knew that you had to get the instruments to "D" if you wanted the care to move. The long pedal made the car go forward and the short one made it stop. It seemed like a lacking education but he was surprised what he still remembered from the whole five times he had actually been in a car, let alone driven one. And it wasn't as if they needed to know all the rules of the road.
Elly helped him fill up extra gas containers so they wouldn't be forced to stop unless they wanted to before California. "This is going to be fun," Elly declared.
"It'll be interesting," John said, noncommittally. "Let's get in."
Elly slid in next to him. "Do I have to wear this?" she asked, gesturing to the seatbelt across her chest. "It's uncomfortable."
"Then leave it off," John suggested. He turned the key and listened to the engine for a moment. "Ready?"
"Top down?"
It took a few minutes for John to find the right button. Finally the top retracted and John looked at his granddaughter. "Ready now?"
"Ready," she agreed.
They took off on the road. Elly squealed at the feeling of the wind rushing through her hair and urged her grandfather to go faster. John couldn't help laughing at her delight. So he pushed the car as fast as it could go, just for her. They spent the day riding through the Midwest. John would slow down at times so they could watch the scenery and then speed up again to make Elly laugh.
When night fell, John stopped the car in the middle of the road. "Why are we stopped?" Elly asked.
"I want to show you something," John told her. "Come here."
Elly wriggled her way into his lap. "What now, grandpa?"
John teleported them to the top of a plateau nearby. "Now you look up."
Elly gasped as she looked into the star filled sky. "It's like someone stuck diamonds in the sky," she whispered. She stretched forward, trying to touch the bright sparks of light.
"Exactly like," John agreed. "Did you know that if you have a very good imagination, you can see pictures in the stars?"
"Pictures?" Elly repeated.
John nodded. "They're called constellations. And a long time ago, scientists gave them all names."
"Do you know their names?"
"And I know the stories behind them all."
"Grandpa."
"Yes, Elly?"
"Teach me about the constellations."
John pointed out stars and told her stories until she fell asleep in his arms.
