Train Ride
by Mahayana
WARNING: mild Shonen Ai (boy x boy love), SPOILER ALERT for 'Doom' Arc (the Arc after Alkatraz Duel Tower)
Pairing: Yami x Yugi
Disclaimer: I wouldn't need one if I owned Yu-Gi-Oh =_=
Author's Note: I saw the thumbnail screenshot version of (I think it was) episode 160 from http://www.janime.biz/ and I thought it was so... well, touching that I had to dig deeper into what Yami might have been going through on that train ride.
I appreciate any and all feedback on this story, but if you really want to make me happy go for some hard core criticism and suggestions on how to improve my writing. I'm not fragile, I promise I won't break down and cry if you point out all my literary blunders. ^_~
Vocabulary:
aibou = partner (Yami Yugi's pet name for Yugi)
Anzu = Tea

His thoughts chased each other like rabid beasts that had caught the scent of blood. Guilt warred with blind rage over his defeat, over whose fault it was that aibou wasn't there anymore. The scenery flew past him in blurs of green, blue and brown, but for all he cared it could have not been there at all. Anzu's kind words didn't reach him, they too became part of the black, white and grey static noise of the background. All Yami cared for now was Yugi. Yugi laughing, Yugi pouting, Yugi smiling sadly as he sacrificed his soul to protect Yami. That memory was still etched all too clearly into his memory, he saw it every time he closed his eyes. He didn't want to forget, though he couldn't even if he wanted to. His mistake, his one mistake towered over him as that winged creature had as she struck him down, taking the last of his life points. He should have listened to his aibou and never have played that card, never have let it touch his hands. That cursed card that had infected his deck in the same way it had infected his mind.
He balled his fists as another surge of rage and guilt swept through him, squeezing his eyes shut to screen out the rest of the world, only to be confronted with more flashbacks of Yugi, more flashbacks of Yugi's sad face illuminated by that eerie green light.
And suddenly he couldn't take it anymore, he had to get away, had to go find something to twist and break and pour his rage into, had to find someplace to scream and cry. Anzu's wide-eyed exclamation of "Yugi! Where you're going?!" pelted off of his deaf ears like small pebbles hitting a glass window.
He stalked through the aisle, stares following in his wake as the other passengers on the train wondered what was wrong with the young man with the strange hairdo.
The idle buzz of chatter was abruptly cut off as Yami slammed the door shut behind him, sealing away all noise except for the ragged sound of his breathing. He was in between compartments now, a train wagon on either side of him. He was alone, the doors were airtight, he was alone and Yugi wasn't with him. Tears began to sting his eyes, his vision going blurry at the impact of that thought.
It was all his fault, his fault for trying to use evil against evil. The desperation to win had won over his better judgment, over the cries and pleads of his aibou. Shame coloured his cheeks, stung his eyes, as he screamed out in rage and punched the metal paneling in front of him. Sharp, hot shards of pain crawled up his arm, but did nothing to ease the pain in his heart.
He had failed aibou, and that hurt the most.
