Draco didn't quite know when his dislike of Potter grew into something more. He had always disliked Potter.
But now, his dislike was a niggling in his brain that made his nerves tingle, a building frustration that made his head throb from the intensity of it. It went beyond the usual need to debase and humiliate Potter, to show everyone that Potter was no god. This feeling bordered on deadly. It coiled around his heart like Voldemort's dark mark.
His father had warned him about Harry Potter before their initial meeting that first year. Not even his father's warnings prepared him for Potter. The first time Draco saw Harry, he was offended. The way Potter's dark hair rioted on his head, the way his scar stared back at him with defiance, everything about him was a personal attack on Draco's good senses.
Sometimes, the first thing he thought about in the morning was how he would kill Harry Potter. He wouldn't be kind enough to give him a quick death with a wave of his wand. He wanted to hold Potter's life over his head like a puppet on a string. He wanted Potter to suffer, to hear him beg—beg him—for death.
Maybe he would even make Potter watch his friends die first. He could only imagine the look of terror in his eyes as he strangled that insufferable mudblood with her own mess of tangled hair or made him listen to the cries of those Weasleys burning alive. A cold, rapacious smile cracked the emotionless plain of Draco's face at the thought.
His father told him he would make an excellent Death Eater one day.
