Eternity

A second seems to last much longer

A second seems to last much longer

When you live forever.

An eternity filled with love

Seems a distant dream for me.

What I fear I face instead

Is an eternity of what might have been.

Everything I want and need in life

Lies just beyond my reach.

I want what I cannot have.

I need what cannot be given.

I curse my immortality.

Your lifetime will hardly register

On this never ending path I walk,

Yet you are why I keep going.

I cannot bear to think

Of my empty life decades, centuries

After you have left this earth.

I want you by my side forever.

The answer seems easy.

I could help you join my long, long walk.

But should I give to you the gift

I was given but didn't want?

If I cannot have you by my side

Then I would wish for eternity to end.

If you were with me, an eternity

Would be nowhere near long enough.
