Trade Shoes With Me

"Do you know what it's like, Jack?" seethed the normally calm Doctor. He walked around the TARDIS, stopping here and there to look at something.

"Being the last of your kind, so unique, but alone?" he shouted again. Jack stood there in silence. If the Doctor wasn't so angry, he might have noticed, a single tear was rolling down his cheek.

"I'm the last, all there ever will be! I am alone, I live forever." He continued walking in circles. Finally Jack spoke.

"I do, Doctor. I don't die. But I guess you forgot about that." It started like a growl, but it ended up making Jack's voice crack. The Doctor barely looked up, he had stopped pacing. Instead, he was staring at a picture.

In the picture, there was a young girl, smiling, laughing. She had bright eyes, and blonde hair. Also in the picture was the Doctor. He wasn't even looking at the camera, just staring at the girl, with a look that conveyed one thing. Love.

Jack stood behind the Doctor, knowing he felt heart ache, but not truly knowing how it must feel. Jack had no idea, how it felt to have a broken heart. He may know what it was like to watch countless generations of friends die.

He knew what it was like to be alone. But he carried nowhere near the guilt that the Doctor did. Jack hardly believed the Doctor could live like this. After watching his race die, his planet burn, and having held his dying best friend in his arms.

"Who would be strong enough Jack? Who do you think would be strong enough, to trade shoes with me?"

"I don't know," whispered Jack. I know it's definitely not me.
