Fabian Rutter had the worse luck with girls.
He was a good guy, honestly, so why did this always happen to him? His middle school crush, Joy, whisked away before he could tell her how he felt. Maybe it was good she left though, because if she hadn't, Fabian would never have met Nina. And Nina…there was a time in which Fabian had thought Nina was it for him. He had thought they would get married and have children and live a long life together, reminiscing of the times they had almost died due to Egyptian mysteries.
And then she left too.
Oh.
That one hurt.
But he got over it eventually, and moved on to Mara. Mara was great too- she could hold an intelligent conversation and they talked freely about anything and everything and Fabian let himself believe that this was it.
And then she left for a new school.
At this point, Fabian Rutter had given up. He obviously wasn't destined to find love.
But then…KT.
He didn't realize it at first, didn't understand how he felt towards her. She was a great girl, no doubt, but for a long time, Fabian had thought they were friends. Just friends. Friends that stood a little too close to each other and smiled at each other a little too much.
Ahem. Just friends.
But when Mara left and he needed a shoulder, it was KT.
"Why does everyone leave me?" Fabian had asked her one day, sitting on his bed and staring off into space, thinking out loud.
KT had shifted uncomfortably in the desk chair that day, and maybe Fabian should've noticed that. But he was moping, all too focused on how long ago, Joy left, on how Nina left, on how Mara left. Even Amber had left, and while they hadn't dated at all, there was one time in sixth grade when they kissed- but that's a story for another day.
Fabian had buried his face in his hands, thoroughly frustrated. He was about to explode- which he did rarely, but when he did, it was fearful- when a hand had been placed on his knee. He had looked up to see KT watching him, looking a little wistful. And then she had spoken, so softly he might not have even caught it, "I never left you."
Maybe it was the spur of the moment kind of the thing, but as their lips collided that day, something in the air changed. It had been a soft kiss, Fabian remembers, and KT had been the one to pull back first, thoroughly embarrassed and looking towards the door as if she wanted to escape the awkward atmosphere.
But she hadn't left.
Because she had told him she wouldn't leave.
And Fabian had sat there next to her, hand softly pressed to her cheek, and he had told her what he had said before, the time she had come into his room with flour in her hair and brick wallpaper in her hands. But the words held a lot more meaning the second time, because they weren't simply platonic that time:
"You are magic," he had murmured to her before blushing profusely, realizing what he had just implied. He had searched her for a reaction, to which she had stood up and for a heartbreaking moment Fabian had thought she was going to leave just like the rest.
But instead, she took a small bow, just like that day with the flour in her hair and the brick wallpaper in her hands.
And Fabian had watched in amusement, forgetting his sorrows as he watched her antics.
KT was magic indeed.
