Musings of an Enemy

Why is the Ice King cursed to forever be alone? He's a nice guy when he wants to be. At least as nice as anyone else in the Land of Ooo.

So he enjoys stealing princesses. So what? All he wants to do is marry them. What's the big deal? He'd give them everything their heart ever desired. He'd give them the moon, the planets, and the stars above if they want. All he asks in return is for…

…Love.

Not even the physical love that everyone rants about. That everyone sings about. The love that makes young men's hearts pump and old ladies faint. He doesn't want that. He doesn't need it. Even the Ice King realizes that kind of love is purely superficial. That it's the weakest form of them all.

No, he wants the other kind. The soul-shaking kind. He wants the kind that when the sky opens up and falls on his head, he'll be okay because she's at his side making it okay. The kind that makes flowers grow and the sun shine and the wind blow and the world spin. The kind that when he wakes in the morning, he wakes up with a grin on his face because no matter what happens that day, he'll still have the unconditional love of his wife. And he'd love her back. Forever.

But no one ever gives him a chance. No one ever lets him show what he's made of. That his heart is a giant empty space waiting to be filled. That when he smiles, people will smile to because there's something to smile about. He's not really evil. He just wants love.

And yet, every time, every time, he tries to seek out something to fill his giant empty chest, the boy would stop him. That boy would run in and destroy everything he's worked for. And laugh in his face because the boy is happy and he's not not not. The boy would rub it in and make sure that when his body is broken, his mind, heart, and soul are too. Then the boy would ride away on his magical dog and leave him in tears because he's the designated bad guy and Finn's the designated good guy.

And the princesses would follow without any care in the world. Why don't the princesses follow him? He's a nice guy when he wants to be. Why is he cursed to forever be alone?

The Ice King has tried to be good. He's tried. But of course, no matter how hard he tries, no one likes him. No one cares enough to look deeper, to look beneath the surface of a grumpy blue man. Because he is and always will be the antagonist to Finn's story. Finn's big heroic adventure. And while the Ice King lays beaten and alone once again, Finn rides off into the sunset with Princess Bubblegum. His Princess Bubblegum.

Does the Ice King not deserve love too? His motives are pure. As pure as anyone else in the Land of Ooo. He just wants that heart-quaking love. The kind that makes your knees weak and jaw slack. The kind that moves nations. The kind that gives everyone their happy ending. Everyone except him.

If the Cosmic Owl has decided that he was going down as a footnote in someone else's story, then so be it. He's just going to have to go down fighting for his dream. His fairytale. His happiness.

And he contemplates this as he takes Princess Bubblegum to his frozen fortress, to start the cycle again.
