Lily and James were sitting under a tree on the Hogwarts grounds.
Lily looked up at James, her emerald eyes wide and innocent.
"James?" she started, then hesitated.
"Lily, what is it?" James asked, worry evident on his face.
Lily looked down and blushed, "It's nothing."
"If it was nothing you wouldn't have brought it up," James half-smiled, still worried. Was something wrong?
"Well," Lily started, blushing a dark red. She looked back up at him, melting under his hazel stare.
"Do you love me?" she asked, hope shining in her eyes.
"No," James said simply.
Looking down again, tears flooded Lily's eyes, all hope lost.
James' hand lifted her chin up, desperate for eye contact.
"Lily. I don't love you," he started, voice full of emotion. "What I feel for you is so much more than that! I love my family, I love my friends. What I feel for them pales in comparison to what I feel for you.
"Love could never describe the way your eyes shine when you talk, the way you always know just what to say. Love simply cannot define my feelings for you. I could never say that I love you and have it contain all that I feel. I don't know how to say it, but it is so much more." His eyes were pleading, "Whatever it is, this feeling that I get around with you, it cannot be love, it must be something bigger, greater. Something worthy of describing you, for which there are no words."
Lily was speechless. Wrapping her arms around James' neck, she kissed the man she would always want to be with, the man she loved-- no more than that, the undescribable feeling building inside her was not to be demoted to such a weak word. Neither of them knew what to call it, but they could both feel it.
Pulling away at the same time, James looked right into Lily's eyes, "'I love you' will have to do for now."
"'I love you, too' will have to suffice also." Lily said, the tears of happiness unable to be contained.
