What Lies Beneath by Tina Simonnet - Lefevre

A few years ago the sea started rising. I don't know the exact reason the sea started to rise. I mean, it was all perfect until humans polluted the earth so much that the already existing hole in the ozone layer got bigger and bigger until we had no ozone layer at all. In Glasgow we were okay because a man called Gaston Wolf invented UV shades - buildings that we had to stay in to not get burnt to death. Each building had a passage to the sea so we could swim if we wanted to if we were underwater we wouldn't burn.
Rapunzel and I swam together everyday until this other teenager (our age) Elsa Bloom moved here, to Glasgow! Her mum was a witch so she cast a spell on Elsa, Rapunzel and I so that we could live underwater. This is what we could do; breath, see, smell, and talk. We were basically mermaids but without tails. The spell cast on us meant that we wouldn't have to live in the evil buildings. Ill tell you why they are evil - everyone thought Gaston was a genius because the buildings would protect us, but him and his team only built so many shades before countries started to drown and flood and all of their population would flock to him for refuge. He tried to let everyone in but soon all of the buildings filled up and he had to watch people drown or burn outside his protective shades. In the shade, their supplies were dwindling. But in our little cave we ate seaweed salads and made meals from natural sources. We never ate fish though!
A few years later we Rapunzel, Elsa and I went up to the surface to find the people in the sunshade sunburnt, lying limp, lifeless, dehydrated and starving. The shade was built quite high and at this point was just at the surface. We also found Glasgow flooded and Elsa had an amazing idea "Hey what would you girls say to some scavenging."
"Like what?" replied Rapunel
"I mean looking in peoples houses for furniture and beds and other homely comforts."
"I'm up for that," me and Rapunzel said in unison.
Speedily, we went to look for furniture. I found a really nice chest of drawers and a bunk bed that I would not share with Rapunzel or Elsa because I'm selfish (we are all scared of heights so none of us would sleep on the top). I also collected sharp knives to transform bits of driftwood I find into gorgeous creations. The other girls both got double beds and Rapunzel found a wardrobe. Elsa got so much stuff that I don't remember half of it. All I know is that she got a lot of ornaments and ornate vases. Rapunzel got loads of rubbers, rulers, pens, pencils and other stationery items. Obviously, I got all of the clothes and shoes (that I liked) and everything to do with unicorns. Oh! Another thing Elsa got was loads of electronics (like the Comdio (Computer/Radio) and stuff along those lines) although Rapunzel got the opposite - books!
We were living contentedly for about thirty years until we woke up one morning to find that the sea was nearly black and debris was floating everywhere. We quickly grabbed all of our most precious items and went on the lookout for the cause of the destruction of our home. We were out looking for hours until Elsa spotted a hole in the sand and we went in to explore.
Inside the gloomy, brooding cavern there was umpteen cauldrons and empty bottles lying everywhere "This is a witch's cave!" exclaimed Elsa a bit too loudly
"Come through here and let me see you now," demanded a sinister, raspy voice
Not knowing any better, we all slid in through the tiny hole in the stone, None of us knew what was happening except from Elsa (obviously because her mum tried to stop evil magic in the world) "Ah, Elsa my sweet." Cruella de vil whispered into Elsa's ear while she squirmed in fear at the sound of her creepy voice…
