The First Time
When he finds out that Lisanna is dead, and he sees the look on Mirajane and Elfman's faces, he thinks to himself that he never wants to see that again.
He thinks his life shatters, because Lisanna was – is – his best human friend, and they did everything together, from hatching Happy to all their crazy antics that would have gotten them into serious trouble if Mirajane wasn't Lisanna's big sister.
He loves Lisanna, but she's not here anymore.
Her brother and sister are, though.
So he takes up the mantel and makes it his mission to bring life back to the both of them, because he knows that it is what Lisanna would want him to do, He challenges Elfman to a fight to see who is more of a "man", and he causes messes to bring a smile to Mira as she shakes her head at his antics.
Slowly, slowly, he and the rest of the guild see the sister and brother knit themselves back together.
The smiles on their faces are gentle, kinder, more compassionate.
He still feels defeated though, because he finds out that they have now lost the will to perform magic.
He and Happy are passing through Hargeon on the way home when he sees the crowd of people.
The first time he sees her, the beautiful girl with the blond hair and kind brown eyes, he feels his heart beat faster and he thinks it's going to burst out of his chest.
Ba-bump. Ba-bump.
He honestly thinks she's the most beautiful girl he has ever seen, and when he finds out that she is looking to join Fairy Tail, somewhere in the back of his mind he thinks this must be fate.
He finds out that the Fairy Tail imposter is really a slave trader, and he is so angry. He rescues her and reveals that he is the real Salamander, and despite her incredulous look, he grins.
He offers to bring her to Fairy Tail, and the smile she gives him is contagious.
When she joins and Mirajane puts the guild stamp on her hand, his smile is so wide he thinks his face will get stuck. He just knows that they will have some fantastic adventures together.
