In A Name

His name is Zuko.

A son. A loyal son.

Wasn't he?

Flames hit his face with the force of a judge's gavel. And suddenly, he was a banished son. Guilty, and scarred, and loyal still.

His name is Zuko.

In the mirror, he turns his cheek to the side, and a shadow falls over the smooth hemisphere of his face. A different boy – half a boy – stares back at the prince through a slit of an eye.

Who is he?

"My name is Zuko."

His says the words with neither arrogance nor shame, because this time he knows what they mean.

The villagers' eyes cloud with the same familiar conviction. Lee recoils.

He is Zuko – his mother's son, his sister's nemesis, and something to his father that he does not have the courage to admit is nothing just yet. Not two boys torn asunder, but one man. And it is time that he starts remembering that.
