Sneaking kisses and hiding clasped hands are nothing but normal to Hannah Montana. As a teen sensation, the public watches and documents her every move so the slightest sign of a boyfriend has tabloids inventing tacky yet catchy headlines before the camera snaps for the accompanying photo. Therefore, Hannah Montana learned to hide her romantic life well, except for those publicity promoting rendezvous.
Lilly understands this, learning through Lola to control herself as well, for the brightly colored hair of her counterpart is affiliated with the pop star to the point of recognition. Soft brushings of their hands as they walk next to each other, hugs after performances, knees touching in the limo although there is enough room to pack twenty of them or more inside, and soft smiles are the most the two show affection while in these forms. So far, their subtle flirtations have them without a telltale trail. Besides, even if the two weren't as shrewd the media would not pick up so quickly as this is Hannah Montana who has had multiple boyfriends and is the idol of girls across the world. Falling for her best friend with the eclectic style and flamboyant hair was not in the job description.
But Hannah Montana wasn't truly Miley Stewart. While a pop queen has to hide from the paparazzi and fans with her relationships to avoid criticism, Miley is only a high school girl who need not worry of such things. She shouldn't have to hide her feelings from the world such as Hannah Montana does under fear of criticism. There won't be any cover stories or judgmental fans, but the equally judgmental people of might be just as tough.
Once again, Lilly understands. When Miley fears that a touch has lingered too long or an action is too suspicious and she pulls away before apologizing fiercely, Lilly always smiles and says 'It's okay.' While the immediate rejection may hurt, Miley always makes up for it with a bolder move than that Lilly made as her apology, getting the blonde smiling again. Even the times when Miley gets too suspicious of everyone's knowledge and refuses to touch or do more than acknowledge Lilly in public, Lilly understands this too. While Hannah Montana might not be all of Miley, she was sure a part of her and the paranoia that comes with hiding a secret from the entire world as Hannah sometimes slips into Miley with a short-lived isolation. At the end, Lilly is always there for her girlfriend.
Sometimes, the secrets are exhausting and the excuses run dry. At those times, the two have learned to separate until tensions die down. Through the hardships, the two seem unbreakable. Boys have come and gone during times of panic where one was sure that everyone knows; paranoid arguments of their mistakes leading to others finding out may happen but they end in soft kisses and warm cuddles. Though such a secret may seem to big at times, the girls hold their heads high with the backing of their love, and that love could be seen in every look they share and every soft brush of skin.
