Authors note: This is my first (and probably only) Legolas/Haldir fic, my favourite being Legolas/Aragorn. This is all Legolas' POV. Enjoy!
I did not believe them when they told me you had fallen. I thought that they had made a mistake, or, at the very worst, that it was some hideous joke. I had to see you before I knew it was true. My words died on my lips at the sight of your pale, pale skin, and the bloodstains on your lips. They had combed your hair, so it fanned into a golden halo on your pillow, and your hands were crossed in silent prayer. Your eyes were closed.
The pain of your death sent my heart spiralling through the skies in grief and despair, searching for you, trying to bring you back, but you were gone. Your life had drained away. I tried to catch it, but it slipped through my fingers like sand. You died, my love, and part of me died with you.
Aragorn said he had seen you fall. I was angry with him for not saving you. He said that you had died in battle, and that it was what you would have wanted. I don't believe you wanted to die at all.
After the pain came numbness. I felt nothing except unending, immeasurable grief. My love for you became a weapon which tore at me. But I didn't want the pain to fade. It was all I had left of you. I tried to be strong for you. I was all that was left of us, but I felt as though half of my heart had been extinguished.
I always tried to be as good and kind as you, my love. And even if I failed, it didn't matter, because you were always there to redeem me. Why did it have to be you?
When I lost you, I remembered every good thing you ever did for anyone. And there were thousands of them. I remembered every single one. They made me love you more.
And now I face an eternity alone, without you. My only hope now lies in death, and I pray that she will not be long in coming, but I died truly when you did, my love.
