There she goes again, stalking past him proudly because he is no one to her. She joins her friends on the other side of the Great Hall, and he admires her once more.
He watches as she puts on a brave face because she is all alone. She pretends otherwise, but he sees right through her… through that tough exterior and her phony manner of laughing off love and all those who are trapped by it. He knows that all she really needs is someone to hold her. And he also knows that he himself is trapped by love, just like those she mocks.
Her friends are paired off, Potter with Ginny, and his faithful sidekick with Lavender. He knows things are not the same for her, because those two goofs now leave her by herself far too often. Maybe it was one of those cases where you didn't know what you had till it was gone.
But he knows that they would never know exactly what they had with Hermione, even when they eventually lost her. They would never know what she wanted, what she craved, and how in this life, only they could give her this.
He delves in the depths of her kind eyes. The same eyes that glare at him coldly, where he feels there should be warmth. Her eyes, which he thinks are the windows to her soul; a soul not unlike his own. She is drowning in her own pretense, forgetting her desires and involving herself fiercely in pleasing everyone but herself. He empathizes with her.
He sees that all she wants is to be wanted. She is so much like him, in ways that only he has noticed. He's just the boy in the background to her, not something to be noticed, not someone who deserves a second glance.
This boy wants so badly to give her what she needs, but he can't. And her friends can give her everything that he has always wanted to give her, but they don't.
And so he is bitter.
