My Lad, Sam

Lord how he missed his boy. He didn't think he would when he had been told that his son was going off to Buckland but he had been fooling himself.

Out of all the children he had had with his beloved Belle; he had to admit he had always loved Samwise most. Yes, he had never shown the boy but he had been so wrapped up in his grief for the lads mother, but Sam well, he had been his boy.

He remembered how the lad would come home from a long day at work and fix him his tea with out so much as a murmur of complaint.

The lad would ramble on as he was cooking about what ever he had walked about with Frodo and Bilbo, that day keeping his father up with the news, then together they'd head down to the Green Dragon.

There he watched as his boy looked at the barmaid longingly.

Rosie had been the object of the boy's affection for so long.

Then that idiot Sandyman would to often get to merry and pick on his son.

He wanted to knock the lad out for torturing his son with his words but Sam had to learn to fight his own battles.

One day he would have to go and join Belle, and then who would protect the lad.

Despite the teasing every one knew Sam was one of the best hobbits in the Shire. Dependable and sure to be there many turned to Sam for help, even Rosie at times.

He didn't know what he was going to do without his Sam to look out for much longer.

He remembered when his lad had been born.

He had been so ill for a time, when he had just been born. It ha been worded that the boy wasn't going to pull through, but he had.

The Gaffer remembered how he had held the boy gentle for days after the birth. Not even had he put the boy down for sleep or eat. It was as if his own life depended on Sam surviving

Belle had sat with them just stroking Sam's hair willing him to get better for them.

The parents had always been over protective off there youngest son even when he had been better.

He had just been their precious baby boy, and always would be.

"Come home to me son," he willed the boy just as he had when he had been ill as a baby.

"Da, are you ok," he heard a voice.

The others had got home from the dragon then.

"Yes May love, I just been missing that brother of yours." he said as he drunk his tea.

He had never felt his age so much.

"Don't worry, Sam will come home to us soon," she said as she hugged her father.

"Will he, lass?" he asked. He had thought that but all these rumors, they were even scarier when your boy was involved.

"Sam wouldn't want you to worry," said daisy to him.

"No but I'm Gaffer, so I do." he said.

Who knew what danger the lass was in?

"What if he needs me daisy? What if I aint der to protect the lad." he asked as he felt the bitter sting of tears.

They all thought such things he was the only one to say it.

"He will come dad, because we believe he will. Don't lose faith. Sam wouldn't have it. And neither will I." she said firmly.

Going out in to the garden Hamfast looked to the stars his son loved so much.

As long as there shining, he'd alive, he thought to himself.

Maybe the girls were right. He shouldn't lose faith. Sam was a ninny, but he was his dad's ninny and that made a lot of difference to Hamfast.

"He'll be home soon."
