Jack laid in his bed lost in thought. Kate had broken his heart, but he was slowly moving on. They had been rescued for a few months now, and life had slowly drifted back to normal. His divorce with Sarah became final, but his relationship with Kate failed. She left him broken inside, but Jack moved on.
Dr. Shephard kept in touch with Juliet, and their relationship grew. At least that was what Jack thought. As soon as he and Juliet became close, she pulled away. But she never gave him an actual reason.
I want to swallow these pills to get to sleep.
Devastated by the fact that Juliet did not want him, Jack took pills to numb the pain.
I won't let you bring me down. It's here and now I'm breaking out.
No matter what it took, Jack was determined to try and win Juliet's heart over and make her forget how broken he was inside.

Dr. Shephard wanted Juliet to love him as much as he loved her. The only way he could think of making her fall in love with him again was to run far away and distance himself from her.
I took one big step and I looked away. And then I thought of all the things I wanted to say. I'm always too late. You never got your story straight. I'm always up late. I think I'm everything you hate.
Over the next few weeks Jack took a step back and distanced himself from Juliet. Dr. Shephard was almost certain that Juliet hated who he had become.

Even though Jack loved Juliet he knew that she would never love him back because he was a broken man.
