Lyin' Eyes

Okay, so I guess this is songfic? I'm not really sure. It came to me whilst I was listening to the song on the radio, and it seemed to fit Chuck & Sarah so well at this time (set right after vs. Suburbs).

~Disclaimer: Chuck belongs to NBC and Warner Bros., not me. If it is for sale, please let me know so I can buy it. However, until then, I make no money from this. Also, 'Lyin' Eyes' belongs to the Eagles, Asylum Records and Warner Bros. (they seem to own everything...). Please don't sue me!~

She had left the house without a word to Casey, simply a thin lipped grimace, before striding over to her Porsche and firing the engine up. Quickly, she pressed the accelerator of the Porsche all the way down to the floor, as tears began to sting the edges of her eyes, blurring her vision slightly as she blinked, trying in vain to concentrate on the suburban road that was flying past her. Feeling a sharp pain in her right hand, she unclenched it, revealing a small prick and the ring. The ring. She closed her eyes for a moment, allowing tears to pool in her lids, before opening them just in time to drift the flawless German engineering onto the freeway slip road.

As she powered along the outside lane, still fiddling with the ring between her thumb and forefinger, she noticed that the radio was on. It must have come on by itself. There were songs playing; mostly sappy love songs requested by one person to another, to celebrate some kind of relationship milestone: anniversary, proposal, wedding. She closed her eyes again, briefly, before the first few chords of a song she recognised came on the radio. She didn't know the words, but the guitar solo sounded familiar.

City girls just seem to find out early,

She stopped the gentle tapping she didn't even realise she was doing, when the first words came gently out through the radio. Opening her eyes, she waited, as the second line of the song wafted out.

How to open doors with just a smile.

She took a deep breath. She knew this song, and she wasn't sure if she could handle hearing it right now. The words continued to drift out of the speakers, as Sarah kept blinking tears out of her eyes. Soon, the chorus began to tumble out; and the words hit her, hard.

You can't hide your lyin' eyes,
And your smile is a thin disguise.
I thought by now you'd realize,
There ain't no way to hide your lyin eyes.

She wrentched her hand away from its position, clenched around the gearshift, and hovered in front of the radio 'off' button. It stayed there, and the song carried on; she couldn't switch it off, nor could she carry on listening. She stopped fighting her tears, as every word seemed to be composed for her.

She's so far gone she feels just like a fool.

Yep. Every word, and every line was composed just for her. Before she knew it, the song was over, and she reached over to switch off the radio, but not before the presenter came back on.

"And that was the Eagle's, Lyin' Eyes, requested by a Charlie Carmichael, for a girl who he's pretty sure knows who she is."

She braked suddenly, and careered across the lanes of traffic onto the hard shoulder, as tears came pouring out. He was going to have hell to pay for this, but he was right. She was mildly aware of the car horn blaring as she leaned on the steering wheel, water dripping onto it from her eyes. She loved him, and she didn't know what to do about it.

~Author's Note~

I'm not sure if that's a little OOC for Chuck, or Sarah. Oh well, I felt like doing it :P.

Best Laid Plans ought to be out by Monday at the very latest.
