The Smile Worth the Frown
Blond tendrils fell across a stern face. Fierce, golden eyes beneath neatly arched eyebrows glared from behind the locks. Thin lips sat in a frown and a perfect nose marked the middle of this work of art. The light above them cast a glow that brightened his normally pale skin. The blond had the exotic looks of a foreigner with Japanese blood flowing through his veins.
On the other side of the table, draped with a red-velvet cloth, sat a strawberry-redhead. Blush red lips formed an adorably sexy pout across the face of a tanned young man. Striking, plum colored eyes bore into his companion in an attempt wear him down.
"Don't back out now, Yuki! Not after I spent so much money on the reservations." Shuichi's eyes became glossy as they began to water. "Please, Yuki."
"I didn't tell you to go behind my back and plan this—", he stopped to think of the word. "Date."
The vocalist trembled. His shoulders slumped and his head fell to his chest.
"Here." He looked up in time for a small, navy box to hit his forehead. Quickly, he picked it up to open it. Inside he found a golden necklace with an adornment. The chain formed an impressive crisscrossing pattern. He pulled it closer to read what had been engraved on the heart shaped pendent attached to the center of the necklace. Yuki Eiri. The redhead looked over to his partner, confusion written on his face. "Yuki?"
The novelist chose not to verbally respond. Instead, he reached to the top of his black, silk shirt. He slowly unbuttoned the top few buttons that revealed his collarbone and the top of his chest. There, a beautiful contrast to his skin complexion, was a necklace much like Shuichi's own. On closer inspection, Shuichi noticed one difference. His name had been engraved on that one.
Shuichi wanted to throw himself against the other. He refrained from doing so. Instead, he chose to clutch the necklace as if it were a lifeline. The overwhelming happiness forced him to break out a room lighting smile that would have blinded anyone. Not counting Yuki, of course.
Yuki turned his head in indifference. He pretended as if he didn't care about Shuichi's reaction to his thoughtful gift. The singer knew otherwise and continued to smile as their food came.
The writer watched Shuichi from the corner of his golden eye. He couldn't help but smile lightly at the cheerful look of his lover.
Yuki loved making Shuichi frown. It made it that much more worth it when he made him smile.
