It was Christmas in the year 2000 when the beginning of this story took place. Liz Parker and Max Evans have been together for 2 years and are blissfully in love. They live together in an apartment in San Francisco and their closet friends live nearby. It's 7:00 and Liz is late for dinner with Max.
Liz sped down the highway trying to stop herself from being more than 25 minutes late, her boss had kept her after to talk about an important business meeting that was taking place the following day and now she was late to meet Max for their traditional Christmas dinner at their favorite restaurant.
As she turned onto the street where the restaurant was she felt a deep pain in her heart that almost caused her to swerve off the road. 'Max' her heart screamed, something was wrong with Max.
As she got closer to the restaurant she realized what that pain was, it was Max. The restaurant was engulfed in flames, Fire fighters struggled to extinguish the enormous fiery mass as it was burnt to the ground. Liz stopped her car in the middle of the road, not even bothering to park or check for her safety as she stumbled across the street towards the flames.
"Where is he?" she asked anyone who would listen. "Where is Max!?" she started to scream his name and frantically searched for him among the masses of concerned citizens.
The Chief fire fighter came over to her and led her to the nearest ambulance where he sat her down, gently wrapping a blanket around her shoulders.
Liz flung the blanket to the ground. "No! I'm OK! I'm not hurt, I don't need a DAMN blanket. I need Max. WHERE IS MAX?" She yelled, frustrated.
The chief turned towards her and slowly shook his head. "Miss, there were no survivors. No one even had a chance to get out, the fire spread quickly, and stopped anyone from even trying to get outside." He explained.
"NO! You don't understand, Max… he's stronger than this, he… he could've gotten out, he would've gotten out!"
"I'm sorry." Was the chief's only reply.
"No… no…NO! Not Max! Not Max, Oh God anyone but him, I need him, MAX!" she cried as she sunk to her knees on the red tinted street and sobbed. The fiery hell around her dimming into to nothingness as the intense wave of pain swept over her and she was engulfed in another round of sobs and the realization of what she had just lost and the part of him that was growing inside of her.
She stayed there, grief stricken and consumed by body racking sobs until she was able to find a phone and dial a life line.
"Hello?" a voice picked up after 2 rings.
"Maria… I need you." And that was all she could say before she dissolved into another flow of tears.
"Liz, where are you?"
"Italiano's" she squeked.
"I'll be right there."
And that was how Maria found her. On her knees, in the middle of the street, with tears rolling down her cheeks, no one bothering to move her.
