Finny raced back to the manor, but deep in his heart, he knew he was far too late. Columns of fire danced around the building, an otherworldly fire, of purple and solid red hues.
He felt tears prick at his eyes as he raced back up the stairs and inside. "No…please…" The tears rolled down from his eyes as he collapsed on the central room floor. Desperately, he ran to the kitchen and servants area. The sight he saw could never be unseen.
Bard was dead. Meyrin was dead.
He fell to his knees sobbing. "Why?!" He screamed to anything that could hear him. Realization hit him too late. "That means the young master is…" he couldn't force himself to form the words.
He knew.
"Why did you do this?" He stared at the floor, a broken, knowing stare. He knew. He knew better than the rest of them did. He knew exactly who did this.
A cold, condescending laugh, one similar to the sound of nails on a chalkboard, filled Finny's ears with an empty sound. "You know," the creature continued, "I had hoped you knew better than to return here. After all, you knew, didn't you?"
He did. He had just hoped it wasn't true. He spoke with a hollow voice. "…I did. But…" Tears streamed down his face as he looked the devil in its eyes. "They were all I had!" The sound was somewhere between a weep and a scream. The creature gave a look of something between pity and curiously. "You poor… poor… thing." The creature walked to Finny and stared him down. "Finnian… child, you have so much of the world left to see… but you will never get to."
Finny glared up at the creature's face, only inches from his own. "Why not?" He barked through his teeth. The creature ran its talon of a nail across his cheek. "Because, Finnian…" its voice became softer, drawing him into a trap. "…I am going to take everything from you."
It almost sounded sorry for him. When it spoke to him for the last time, he saw the blood and venom on its teeth, eyes cast downward. In a strange gesture, it wrapped its arms around his shoulders, but it did not cry. Ever since Finny had known the truth, he knew it couldn't, or it couldn't feel the emotional aspect of it. He found himself almost unable to blame it- this was all it ever was, ever had been, and ever would be.
What an unfortunate life, Finny thought, unable to ever feel anything for anyone or feel anything because of anyone. He looked down at the bloodied bodies of his friends beside him. They were all I ever knew. They made me feel joy, sorrow, happiness. They gave me a home... A family… you must never have known what that's like to feel, haven't you? What an unfortunate life. I'm so sorry.
The creature's hands shook from behind Finny. "You knew this had to happen, didn't you?" Numbly, Finny nodded. It continued to speak, voice at only a whisper. "…then I hope, when you find them…" The creature looked down at Bard and Meyrin, an empty, emotionless stare. "… you are happy… with them."
Finnian's soul drifted on, his body left behind, cradled in the arms of his family.
