Chapter 1

Linoic Leatherleaf

Frodo Baggins walked down the path to the Green Dragon. It had been two months since he turned thirty-three that also meant it had been two months since his uncle Bilbo had left. He was to meet his friends Meriadoc Brandybuck and Peregrin Took, more commonly known as Merry and Pippin. He didn't know why they had asked him to come, but had decided not to question their reasons and just go.

After his uncle left he hadn't been down to the Green Dragon as much. He didn't know why, he just didn't feel like going. Instead he would take walks just outside Hobbiton or stay at home and read a book in front of the fireplace. He wasn't sure what had made him change; maybe it was the fact that Bilbo had left and he felt, now that he was on his own, he needed to act more maturely or maybe it didn't have anything to do with Bilbo leaving and he had just changed for no reason what so ever. Whatever it was it didn't really matter to him, as long as he was acting how he really wanted to act.

"Frodo!" he heard his name called from the center of the room as he entered. He looked to where he had heard his name and sure enough sitting at the table in the center of the room was Merry and Pippin. He smiled, shook his head, and walked over to his two friends. He could hardly believe that they were his cousins, well not direct cousins, but through the long family tree they were all related.

"Hello, Merry, Pippin," Frodo said taking a seat at the table.

"Hello," they both said.

"So, why did you ask me to come down here tonight?" Frodo asked.

"We just thought you needed to get out. You haven't been here in over three weeks!" Pippin said as three drinks were set on the table in front of each of them. Frodo looked up to see who had given them their drinks only to find that whoever it was had already gone.

"Who was that?" Merry asked Pippin.

"I don't know, I've never seen her around here before though," Pippin replied. "Have you, Frodo?" Frodo just shook his head. Who was she? Even more confusing to him was that neither Merry nor Pippin had heard of her before. News usually spreads around Hobbiton quickly and if she were new here then he would most likely know who she was and where she was from before the end of the night.

The night at the Green Dragon went on as usual. A few people sung a song now and then while others just sat around and listened to the latest gossip. Frodo was one of the people to listen to the gossip. He wanted to know who the hobbit was that had served them their drinks, but there was nothing in the gossip that he hadn't heard before.

As the night came to an end and people started to leave Frodo sat by the fireplace thinking about the mystery hobbit-lass. He hadn't even noticed that everyone was gone until someone tapped him on the shoulder. He spun around to see a face that he had never seen before.

"Excuse me, sir, but everyone else has left and we need to clean up," she said. She had long light brown hair and eyes the color of the sky.

"Oh, I'm sorry. I hadn't realized it was that late. Please forgive me," Frodo said as he started for the door. She smiled.

"It's quite all right. What is your name?" she asked.

"I'm Frodo Baggins," he said. "And you might be?"

"Linoic Leatherleaf," she replied.

"Well, Lady Linoic, I must be going. It was a pleasure meeting you," he said as he kissed her hand and started for the door once again.

"It was nice to meet you, too," she said just before he stepped out the door.
