When It Rains…
It was night. It was raining.
Max had been waiting at the location for several hours. She was soaked through and beginning to shiver when a car pulled up, headlights reflecting off the black leather of her jacket.
"Get in." he said.
She hesitated, staring at him through the open window.
"Do your kind catch cold?" he asked.
She shook her head. "Not for a long time."
"Get in." he repeated.
Deciding to risk the consequences for a break from the storm, she crossed in front of the car and climbed in to the passenger seat.
White flicked up the heat.
"How long you been there anyway?" he broke the silence.
"A while.." she answered grudgingly.
"Contact not show?"
She glared at him.
"What did you do this time? Road block? Threats? Took him out yourselves?"
"Hey..!" he protested. "I had nothing to do with it!"
"But someone else did?" she demanded.
White chuckled. "Much as I'd love to take the credit for this, it was just bad luck. You got screwed over - it happens."
"Not to us." she said mulishly.
"Yes, even to you." he teased.
She didn't reply. Soon the low drumming of rain and the purring car heater were the only sounds between them.

"What do you want?" she snarled suddenly.
He shrugged. "Saw a pretty girl getting wet, offered her a dry seat."
"You admitting I'm human now? That's not like you, White. Been so long you'll hit on anything...?"
"You calling yourself a thing?" he countered with a grin.
She looked away, frustrated by the failed meeting and this bizarre turn of events – civil conversation with Ames White.
"What kept you out on a night like this?"
"Had to see a guy about medication." she answered without thought, lips tightening as she realised the slip.
"Seizures?" he asked.
She turned to him, surprised by what sounded like concern. Must have been interest in potential weakness, she decided.
"Vitamins. I can still kick your ass." she declared.
His eyes narrowed and Max was suddenly aware of being in a concealed environment with a lack of witnesses. Who cared what Ames White was thinking, she should get out of there before he stopped being nice.
The storm was beginning to ease. She blew water from her hair and reached for the door.
"See you soon, 452..." White called after her.
She slammed the door with a little more force than necessary and strode off.
He watched her go and chuckled. It was too much fun confusing the freak. It put her off-balance and that made her sloppy. She hadn't tried to kill him even once, and there had been plenty of opportunity - tinted windows and all...
