What Could Have Been
It had started out the way things should have been months ago. They had both dressed up and Fitz had come to drive her to the restaurant that he had picked out. They had gotten there and sat down, everything had seemed perfect.
Just the way it should have been…
The thought entered her mind before she could stop it and she glanced down at her shaking hands, trying to find anything to focus on. The lights in this place still seemed too bright compared to what she had endured, endless darkness. She took a shaky breath, trying to put a smile on her face for Fitz.
He did this all for me… even after all this time…
His faith that he would find her still astounded her, even after these six months that they had been separated. He had kept going, having hope that he could find a way to get her back. The waiter had handed them there menus and that was when everything seemed to go downhill.
Her mind could barely process that there was all these choices of what to eat, and all the food just lying around here as well, waiting to be prepared. For the first time in six months, she actually had the choice of what she was going to eat. She didn't have to worry about starvation.
All this here and yet…
She could feel the pinpricks in her eyes that meant that tears were close so she tried to distract herself again. A moment later she had to lay the menu down, her vision being blurred by unreleased tears.
Why now of all times?
She had been able to hold it together until now, why couldn't it just wait a little longer? Just until she got back to her room and then no one would be watching. She hated making them all worry, which helped her to hide her feelings to some extent.
This should have happened months ago…
A sob racked her at this, and she vaguely registered in her mind that Fitz had sent the waiter away and come closer to her. He put his arms around her as she continued to shake, causing her to lean into his touch. The tears still fell and once again she felt like her heart was breaking into a million pieces. As she stared, through blurry eyes, around at all Fitz had done for her, even to the extent that he had kept it up all this time, she couldn't help the tears that continued to flow as she was reminded what could have happened between them.
