Does anyone ELSE remember the random little dude that sat on Hiei's shoulder in episode 8 that never appears again? This is my theory on what happened to him.

A Parting of Ways

Sachie Yoritomo

Hiei sat in his cold, dank cell in the Reikai prison and stared at the wall. His plan had been good, nearly perfect. His fatal flaw had been arrogance- hubris. The little man on his shoulder was trying to disagree, but Hiei, the true, inner Hiei, knew when he was beaten.

He had made mistakes. He knew, or at least recognized, on some level, that his 'transformed' self was far weaker than his unpolluted being. It left him open to attacks that he normally wouldn't have been vulnerable to.

He realized now that the Jagan did not make him invincible. It was a fantastic tool, a marvelous weapon, but he himself was what made it great, and not the other way around. The Jagan could help him wield enormous power, but it was power he did not inherently posses simply because he had the Jagan implanted. He knew now that the third eye did not magically grant him power, but allowed him to attain powers he wouldn't have been able to otherwise.

The Jagan was not strength. It was just a tool, a weapon, like a sword. One that he would have to learn how to use properly.

He knew why he had lost. Hubris- and it was yammering away in his left ear at this precise moment. The little grey demon wasn't an aid to him. It corrupted his thought process, it distracted him. As a matter of fact, Hiei couldn't come up with a single good reason the little guy was around, anyway.

The small demon disagreed with everything that was going through Hiei's head, but perhaps that was precisely the point.

Hiei knew he couldn't JUST send him away. The little bugger knew entirely too much. Entirely too much… No. It wouldn't do.

He knew his options from Koenma- he could cooperate, be a part of the spirit detective team and be released to Ningenkai, but under surveillance; or he could sit here, in this cell, and rot for the rest of his days. Neither choice appealed to him, and so he had sat here for nearly 2 weeks, thinking.

Arrogantly, the little demon said that the two of them were better off without anyone. ESPECIALLY not her. Then, Hiei saw them grab her, and take her. He saw gems on the snow. The shoulder demon laughed at her, and Hiei snapped. Lightning fast, he reached up and grabbed the little demon, and squeezed his head until he struggled and kicked and screamed no more. He threw the lifeless corpse to the other side of the cell, into a corner.

His shoulder demon had told him told him to sit and rot in that cell, but when he closed his eyes, he saw blue hair and a beautiful, innocent smile. Out there was life- she was out there, somewhere.

He called to be taken to Koenma. He had made his choice.

That was fun. I enjoyed that little vignette. Read and Review!! Again, Happy New Year and Merry Late Christmas.
