Even God Must Get the Blues

Disclaimer: I don't own any of the characters or the song.

Dana decided to walk home from Rittenhouse. She knew that it was a long risky walk but she didn't care. She was lost in her own thoughts the whole while and before she knew it she was at her door. She opened it and walked in. After a shower and a change of clothe she walked over to the phone and dialed Peter.

"Hello?" a voice said on the other end.

"Peter." Dana started.

" This is Peter Rigs," the machine continued.

"Damn!" Dana said as she slammed the phone down in its cradle. She really needed to talk to someone. 'Lana.' she thought ' No she had classes and she had to be at work early. Nick. No to awkward. Bob, well he was out of the question. Lu she would be home' and Dana knew that she would be supportive. Dana picked the phone back up and dialed.

"Hello?" a groggy voice on the other end answered.

"Hi ahh.Lu do you have a minute?"

"Dana it's twelve thirty in the morning and I have morning duty."

"I know and I'm sorry, but I really need to talk to someone." Dana's eyes filled up with tears just thinking about it.

"I'm listening." Lu said in an agitated voice.

Dana took a deep breath. "I.I ahhh, I lost the baby." Dana finally said.

" Oh god Dana I'll be right there."

" Lu no you don't have to." There was a click on the other end. Dana sighed as she hung up the phone and sat down on the couch and looked out the window at the city. As the tears streamed down her face she wondered if she did the right thing in calling Lu. She looked over in the corner, the playpen that she bought the other day was still in the box. Just then there was a knock at the door with out waiting for an answer Lu opened it.

"Dana?" Lu called as she stepped into the apartment.

" In here." Dana said.

Lu walked in to her living room and apprehensively sat down next to Dana. She just sat there next to her for almost fifteen minuets in silence. Dana finally spoke. " I never felt like that.that horrible dead space the feeling of nothing ever before. And I can still feel it now, the numbness, all through my body." Dana paused "Today all of my dreams were shattered. There is nothing left, nothing!!" Dana's voice had raised in the last few words that she had spoken.

Lu put her hand on top of Dana's. "I have never been in that kind of situation before. I mean I have Marc and." Lu's voice trailed off. " I'm not here to tell you what to do, just to listen." Lu said softly.

"Thank you." Dana said

" Did you tell Peter yet?"

" I tried but he isn't home. I walked from RWHC. I just had to walk I couldn't drive. See that box over there. That was the first thing I bought when I found out I was pregnant." Dana stopped and took a ragged breath. The tears spilled from her eyes and made the journey down her face. "We had something then, and now we have nothing.nothing at all." Dana sobbed as Lu pulled her into a tight hug. The sobs raked her for almost a half a hour before she finally fell asleep. Lu let Dana go and grabbed a pillow and a blanket, wrote her a note and placed it on the coffee table where she could find it. She looked around the room then bent down and kissed on the cheek, Dana had a long, hard rode ahead of her, but Lu was sure that she could make it she was strong. Lu got in to her car and turned on the radio. The last verse of Jo Dee Messina's Even God Must Get the Blues was playing. Tears ran down her face as she reflected on her day and the words of the song: A young girl hides her face in shame so they can't see that it's been battered and bruised. Like she is the one to blame. Yes even god must get the blues. Yeah the devils been so busy lately that even god must get the blues. "I bet that he does." Lu said to her self as she pulled out of the parking lot.
