A/N: So I found this little thing I wrote for an English class prompt last year(?). The prompt was: write a story that ends with "... They looked at each other and smiled meaningfully." And during that time I was completely obsessed with Jily and the Marauders so, this happened. honestly, writing fanfiction as homework. I can't tell if thats a good thing or not

Once upon a time, there was a troupe of boys who prided themselves on their ability to conceive and carry out, successfully, the most ingenious pranks and tricks the population of Hogwarts had ever seen. The Marauders, they were dubbed, as was fitting to their reputation. It was not uncommon to see the Marauders huddled together in a secluded corner of the common room, no doubt working out the kinks in their then ongoing master plan. They consisted of the ever-charming James Potter, the dashing Sirius Black, the smart bookish Remus Lupin and, the mundane Peter Pettigrew.

A gray Sunday morning found three quarters of the Marauders sneaking around in their dormitory. In typical British fashion, the heavy dark clouds blocked out the sun and fog was rolling in over the grounds. As if to prove a point, a chilly draft blew in from under the door, causing the three boys to shiver and their breaths to mist in front of their faces. This was a very important mission they had today, they were on the warpath as evident with the chaos they had caused in the room. These three boys were looking for James' diary.

After an hour of fruitless searching, Sirius was starting to get desperate. After all, since this was his plan, he would undoubtedly take the fall for it lest it fail. He was not looking forward to being punished in some excruciatingly humiliating way. Remus gave a great sigh as he finished turning over James' trunk, something he had been doing methodically for the past half an hour. He collapsed on the bed and was rewarded with a sharp object poking him in the neck. He reached behind to fish out the offending object and brought forward, a pillow. Sensing something amiss, he dug around in the cover and found a small green leather-bound book. Sirius, upon seeing the book, snatched it out of Remus' hands with a whoop of victory, conveniently forgetting it wasn't him that found it. His eyes gleamed with mischief as he looked down upon the cover, upon which was inscribed in cursive gold lettering-"James Potter's Diary". Sensing Remus' and Peter's gaze, he nodded in the affirmative. They looked at each other and smiled meaningfully.
