Maybe they're not technically together right now, but what are titles anyway? "Maybe" they're both in love with each other, but haven't said aloud those words to each other. Maybe there are too many risks involved, but then again, what's love without risks? Maybe timing isn't on their side yet, maybe they just have to wait a while longer. Or maybe they're stalling themselves for no reason at all. But nevertheless, they're in love with each other.
Maybe at a glance or two, or every day for the past eight years, they knew something was brewing. Maybe this is all too terrifying to think about, or perhaps not. Maybe he's always right, taking life threatening risks and maybe she's always wanting to punch him for doing that to her all the time. Maybe they'll live lives full of regret if nothing is ever said, but she knows better than that. Because nevertheless, she's in love with him.
Maybe he'll lose everything he's ever wanted, or maybe he'll win everything with only a few words. Maybe he's not sure of anything at all, or perhaps he is. Maybe she's always strong, always picking up his mess, and maybe he's always weak wanting to thank her but only rarely does. Maybe he'll get more than he can give, but she will always correct him, and he'll always smile when that happens. Because nevertheless, he's in love with her.
Maybe both of them were thinking the same thoughts as they sat together on her couch reading, but maybe not really reading anything at all.
"Cal."
"Yes, darling?"
"Thank you for staying with me tonight."
Maybe he isn't willing to admit that he also needed her tonight after this case, or maybe that he needs her in his life, period. But all he says is,
"Don't mention it."
In the end, once they come to their senses, it will be the best decision they'll ever make. Because nevertheless, they're in love with each other.
