She did it. She did the one thing that she told herself she was never
going to do. But, the time had finally come for her to tell the truth and
not to just anyone, to the one who mattered the most in her life. The one
who knew her past, her presence and what the future held for her.
It was a hot summer's day and every newsie was at his or her wit's end with selling their newspapers. It was too hot. Most newsies decided to cool down in the East River. That's where they all were except for two newsies. The two newsies that everyone would have expected to see there but they weren't there.
The bunkroom of the Brooklyn lodging house was quiet, it was unusual. There was always at least one person gabbing away but the only two people, who were there, said nothing. Finally, the girl broke the silence.
"We'se need ta talk." She said, tucking a strand of her reddish, light brown hair behind her ear.
"Yeah, I guess we'se do." The boy said.
The girl sighed. "I'se known ya fer a long time. And, at foist, I'se knew we'se didn't really like each other. But, den, one day, all of dat changed. Ya did somethin' that fer evah changed my view towards ya. You were da one ta show me kindness, you were da one ta show me what a good person is and you were da one ta show me what a real friend is. But, den, a day only a few months latah, ya proved dat da best was yet ta come. Ya kissed me. It was me foist kiss and a kiss dat I'll nevah ferget. Now, I'se sit heah and I'se think about things. I'se realized somethin' very important. We'se been through a lot together. You were dere through the good times and da bad. Yer more den a good friend, yer da best damn boyfriend a goil could ask fer." She said.
He smiled and walked over to where she was standing. He wrapped his arms around her and she wrapped her arms around him. "Wheah's all dis comin' from?" He asked.
"In heah." She replied, pointing to her heart. He smiled once again and kissed her deeply and passionately. The kiss lasted awhile but it soon broke. "I love you, Spot." She whispered.
"I love you, too, Pyro." He whispered back. She smiled at him and knew that everything was going to be perfect from then on.
She had finally done it. She said those three words that she was afraid to say. It was a challenge for her and she overcame it. Those words were her biggest fear but in the end they brought her the greatest joy. All she needed was the right person to say it to and that was him, Spot Conlon.
