"You have to concentrate if you want to do this!"

"I'm trying, but you keep yelling at me!"

"Humph!" Shadow turned away. "You're hyper and you can't sit still. I understand that, but you're not actually letting go of all your fears. Physical strength is important, but if you want to beat Shadow Link, you must be serene."

"If you'd just give me time to sit still, maybe I could focus!"

"Link, you asked for a master to teach you to meditate. Well, here I am! I'm guessing you don't really appreciate superiors, though."

"Gee, what gave you that idea?" Link rolled his eyes. Y'know, when I said 'master', I meant 'Someone to help me.' Not 'supreme overlord.'"

They'd been like this all day. Shadow was trying to teach Link to meditate, and Link refusing. A cold breeze sent shards of darkness scuttling across the Dark World's ground, like leaves. Red and black clouds drifted lazily in the sky.

"It's a beautiful day," Shadow suggested. "Look at the clouds."

Link looked up into the staring eyes of the clouds. The Dark World's spell was working on him. The serene peacefulness had taught the Twili, the people of the Dark World, to achieve peace of mind. As a Twili herself, Shadow was teaching Link.

As Link's eyes started to droop, Shadow began to hum. It was an odd song with many strange notes, and almost no melody. Strange as it was, though, it was hypnotizing, and provoked a calm feeling in Link that soon pulled him from consciousness.

It was dark, and Link couldn't tell if he was floating or standing up. An evil laugh echoed along invisible walls.

"Don't worry." An evil voice drawled, using a tone that suggested Link do just the opposite.

"W-who are you?" Link stammered.

"I am the evil you search for." The cold voice laughed. With a shock, Link realized that the voice was quite similar to his own.

"Shadow Link" Link whispered.

"Scared, little boy?" Now, Link could make out an approaching figure. His hat and tunic were black, and his armor was deep red. His hair was dark purple, and his face was antagonistic.

"I'm not afraid of you." Link attempted to draw his sword, but his arm didn't move. "It doesn't matter, though." Link thought. "My sword probably isn't there, anyway."

"You are trying to save what I have already taken." Shadow Link sneered. "But it is a fool's errand. The Dark World is mine, and I cannot run the risk of losing it to you."

Shadow Link crouched, and his form vaporized into thick, dark smoke. Suddenly, before Link could react, the smoke flew at him at lightning speed. It passed into his chest, making Link cry out. But it was too late. Slowly, he could feel evil seeping into his good heart.

"Link, Link, Link..." A cold laugh.

"Link...Link...Link..."

"Link! Link!"

He opened his eyes. Shadow was above him, laughing and trying to shake him awake.

"Link, you did it! A meditative trance, you're on your way!"

Link sat up. But he did not see his friend Shadow. He saw a threat to the world he owned, a threat he had to destroy.

"Link?" Shadow backed away. "Are you okay?"

"Of course I am." He responded in a cold, evil voice. "Why do you ask?"

"You-your eyes glinted red, and-and-...wait, th-that's not your voice..."

"Of course it is." Link stood up over a cowering Shadow. "Your quest ends now. Pure, true darkness shall now rule this land.

As Link lunged, Shadow's mouth opened in terror, but she never got to scream.
