Blessed Protector

Sandburg was late, as usual. It was past midnight. That was unusual for Blair. Jim growled, looking at his watch and took out his cell phone once again.

"Chief, answer me, for God's sake!" he muttered hearing only a monotone, long beeping, while he tried to call Blair. Jim dialed the number again and again, but nothing happened and Sandburg didn't answer.

After some time with the cell phone in hand, Jim sighed heavily and shook his head. He definitely knew that something was wrong and he couldn't fight the urge to find and protect his friend at all cost. Maybe he was overacting treating Sandburg like this, or maybe it was his instinct, a Sentinel thing.

He tried to reason the whole situation out. Sandburg was an adult, very capable of keeping himself safe. Jim made a quick call to Blair's friends and in no time was on his way to the university. It was the last place where the anthropologist had been seen a rather long while ago.

Sandburg's office door was ajar and Jim could hear music from the inside. His previous worries were apparently needless, because Blair forgot about the whole world while working on something.

"Sandburg, it's really late. You should let me know when you're still working," Jim said, entering Blair's office, trying to keep his tone light.

And then he saw Sandburg lying on the bloodstained floor. Immediately he focused his heightened senses on Blair's vitals while he kneeled besides him hastily.

"Chief, can you hear me?" Jim's words seemed make Blair to flutter his eyelids. "That's it, Sandburg, stay with me. Come on, stay awake." But then Jim realized that Blair had lost consciousness again and as quickly as he could he started calling for an ambulance and Simon Banks. At the same time he tried to assess Blair's injuries the best he could.

He heard a hushed voice which was strangely familiar. He wanted to follow this voice but he couldn't… He thought it was Jim who was trying keep him conscious, but it was too much for him. As darkness flooded his mind, the unbearable pain in his head and chest was slowly floating away.

Next thing he knew, he was lying in strangely unfamiliar bed and he couldn't move. Worse still, he cracked his eyes open and everything was blurry. His panic rose while he tried ineffectually to get up. He was really scared and lost his breath. He felt lightheaded.

Suddenly he felt a warm hand on his arm and heard Jim's voice soothing his panic.

"Calm down, Chief, it's alright. You're in hospital, safe. Try to breathe slowly. That's it". With Jim's help, he relaxed and turned his head, wincing.

"Can you tell me what had happened?" Jim's bright, blues eyes watched him attentively. " Do you know who it was?"

Blair nodded slowly but remained silent. He fought to keep his eyes open, but he lost that battle and drifted off.

"Okay, Rambo. We'll talk when you feel better. You owe me again, Chief… "
