There was a time, so long ago
When all was new and fair
There was a time, so long ago
Hope glistened in the air
The winters came, the winters fell
And always fell the leaves
And struggles always came anew
When birds whistled in the breeze
Then came the Elves, their sturdy ships
Which bore them through the Seas
Came to a land, the Ancient Ones
Of simple-looking trees
They taught the world to laugh and sing
To dance beneath the moon
A lilt of magic in their voice
Heart-plucking was the tune
They sang of flowers, birds and bees
Of rivers and of looms
And when they thought they had their chance
They taught the trees to bloom
So grateful were the trees to them
So long was all their cheer
They longed to please the Elven folk
So bloomed through all the year
We watched our friends, our long-time friends
Pack up their things and leave
Their hearts were heavy with a weight
That we could scarce believe
The years, they did drag on and on
And slow the magic died
And through those years the trees did weep
The breeze became a sigh
The Elves, they left their long-lived homes
For where, we do not know
But still our branches long for them
When we are hid in snow
