I don't own Princess Mononoke or any of the characters.

He was the prince of a long forgotten tribe.

She was the princess of ancient wolf gods.

Both lived far from each other, their paths most likely never to cross. Until one day…

He is cursed by a demon. He cuts his hair. He is forced into exile from his tribe.

For many days he traveled. Over mountains, rivers, forests and valleys. He travels alone, his red elk mount ever his only company.

On his journey he comes across a monk whose purposes are unknown to all but the monk himself. He travels with the monk for a bit, leaving when he felt he once again had to travel on his own.

He found two men along a river. That's when he saw her.

She had attacked the humans who threatened to destroy the forest. With her brothers, she attacked and killed many of them. She had tried to kill the gun woman and nearly died herself, her mother being the only reason why she was still alive.

She and her brothers found their mother along the side of a river. Their mother had been wounded by the gun woman. She had tried to heal her mother's wound. That was when she sensed someone watching her.

He rose from his hiding spot and exposed himself to the extraordinary sight in front of him. Before him were three ancient wolf gods, one much larger than the other two, and a young girl dressed in tattered clothes and a wolf pelt.

She thought the human had to be crazy. What other explanation could there be for the human male to have exposed himself? The human seemed like he wanted to talk, but she knew her mother would not allow it.

"Go away," was all that she said before mounting one of her brothers and following her mother back into the forest. She would not see the human male again until later than night, just before she could cut off the gun woman's head.

He had gotten between the wolf girl and gun making woman. He had stopped the fighting when his demon mark was exposed. He had gotten the girl back to her wolves before he lost consciousness.

She had awoken to the sight of one of her brothers with the human male's head in his jaws. She had called to her brothers to leave the human and return home, assuring them that she would catch up. She had brought him to the pool of the great Forest Spirit.

He had awoken to find his wounds heals, but his curse still remained. The Forest Spirit had left the demon curse behind. There was no hope for him to be cured.

She had found the human lying near the edge of the Forest Spirit's pool. The humans red elk had told her much about the human and his homeland.

The Boar Clan came to the pool of the Forest Spirit. Her mother and brothers were also there. The human spoke to the leader of the boars, showing them the demon mark as proof that what he said was true. Her mother revealed that she herself was dying from the human bullet in her chest.

The boars declared war on the humans. The humans declared war on the forest. The wolves fought with the boars, more out of sympathy than anything else. He remained neutral throughout the entire war.

The monk had gotten the head of the Forest Spirit. The Forest Spirit had gone on a rampage looking for his head, destroying everything in his path. All would die, human and animal alike.

They both worked together to return the head to the Forest Spirit. He was freed from the demon curse. She had avenged her mother's death.

They each parted ways reluctantly, having realised their feelings for each other. She returned to the forest with her brothers. He went back to the human town to help them rebuild.

An exiled prince and a wolf princess. So different, and yet so alike.

Who would have thought that from such different individuals could grow the most precious gift of all, love?
