Human nature is a sad thing really. People often say that the way we love, and the way we show compassion is what makes us human. What's sad is that when I look around I don't see it. At least I didn't use to. If the way we love is what makes us human, why do we say things like, she fought like a lion to protect her kids?
I didn't understand that either. At least not until I became a Mercer, and I learned to protect my own.
Unfortunately the one I want to protect the most has recently decided that he needs to learn how to take care of himself, which is the reason he's got a black eye and a tied tongue right now. I watch as he fights, and I'm proud, I really am. When he wins I'm smiling, and I smile even more when he's gone home and I approach the beaten figure on the ground.
