A/N: Its been a long time since I've written a fanfiction. I've been pretty into death note lately. The first anime I've seen in close to 8 years. Lately all I've been doing is writing so as I write out my books remainder Ill present you with a death note story. The story will be updated quiet frequently so enjoy it. The story also takes place before the BB L.A. murders. Sorry this chapter is so short, but no worries, I'm hoping to have the next up within two days.

This story rating may change to M later on. There are some strong themes

January 5th 1996

"6:45pm." A young woman huffed slightly, she glanced at a nearby pay phone on the street. Was waiting really worth it for this person? She was being set up on a blind date by a dear friend of hers, and now, glancing at the payphone she debated calling him. So there's three numbers to call... He might still be at work, maybe just got home or in his office. She dug into her coat pocket, pulling out a small coin purse and marched to the phone. Throwing in a quarter she dialed his work number.

"L.A.P.D. morgue, this is Camny speaking."

"Camny!" She heard some brief shuffling on his end as something dropped with a clang.

"Oh- what? Aren't you on your date? What are you... Calling a payphone for?"

"Yeah I would be on a date if he showed up." She muttered irritatedly, making a side glance at the bars entrance when she heard some lively chatter.

"I see... So? Are you going to leave or?"

There was some silence on her end as she thought a moment, glancing at her watch again 6:47pm. "Well it won't kill me to wait till seven. The bastards already forty seven minutes late."

"Oh geez-"

"Yeah you know how to pick them." She laughed slightly at her own joke.

"What? Hey! I've known him a few years now... I was sure he would be at least reliable. Well do I owe you some chat time for this while you wait? I'm needing a break anyways."

"Oh about that... Why are you at work so late?"

There was a long exaggerated sigh on his end, "death... More death. On my way to leave they brought in another victim of God knows what? Still trying to figure out the cause of death."

"No sign of foul play?"

"No, it's weird, I mean we found some weird anomalies... Jesus- hurry it up and BECOME A DETECTIVE ALREADY!" She pulled the receiver from her ear, "I need someone to solve this stupid case pronto so I can go home and actually have a decent meal for a change rather than eat instant noodles in a morgue."

She started laughing a bit at her friends expense, "geeeee... Camny.." She mocked him, "I'm trying but I'm stuck in the cold case department at the moment!"

"Yeah-"

There was a pat on the shoulder and she quickly turned around, facing a man with green eyes, blond hair... Oh wait that description matched. "Ack sorry Cam, gotta run." She hung up the phone quite quickly "um.." She looked over his attire, long brown trench coat, business bag in hand with the caduceus pinned onto it. "Your Mr. Kado?"

He backed up a little, looking extremely serious, "yes uh... I'm extremely sorry for how late I am, but yes.. I'm Mr. Kado." He put his bag down briefly and held out his hand "You are Ms. Onii I presume?"

She took his hand nodding, "Well at least you showed up!" She forced a smile.

"Well, yes." He lifted a hand and made a gesture to the bar entrance. "Well... We can go to the bar? Or maybe walk in the park? There are cafes around too." He began suggesting.

"Well? I suppose a cafe would do good, bars getting rowdy and a bit noisy." She chuckled slightly.

"Excellent idea." He bent down to retrieve his bag. "Well, come along then. I did see a place on the way here."

She stepped out of the phone booth and they proceeded to walk down the road. "So how do you know Camny? He was the one that set the two of us up."

He was silent a moment, "well, I have to go a few times a week on the job in all honesty, I drop in the medical reports off and on for certain people emitted into the morgue." She piped up at that, so he was a doctor? Well that explained the bag. "Unfortunately I got off work almost an hour past what I expected, I couldn't even go home to drop off my stuff, and change. So yeah... Still in uniform."

Well he was making a slight impression on her. At least he took his job seriously, "Aren't you a surgeon? I think he mentioned something along the lines... but I could be wrong."

"Oh, yes. Been practicing it since I graduated. First year on the job." He beamed.

"Oh wow so how old-"

"26."

'Oh jeez, thanks Camny this guys way older than me...'

"How about you?"

"19."

"Oh say what? I thought you were older." She was taken aback by such a bold statement.

"Oh... Gee, thanks." She muttered bitterly

"No, don't take that the wrong way, actually I meant mature for your age."

"Oh I see..." Then came an awkward pause, 'I don't think this is going to work out at all.' She let out a sigh.

"You with the L.A.P.D? Aren't you?" He quickly changed the topic.

"Oh yes, currently studying, but my courses let me learn in the actual work place. So in a sense I'm working, trying to solve a cold case with my superior, so it's on the job training." She sounded quite passionate about it so he pressed it further.

"Do you intend to stay in cold case area?"

"Hm, no. While its a good place to give families closure, my main goal is to work with other detectives on more recent crimes."

"Is that so?" He mumbled slightly.

"What about you? Why don't you tell me about yourself? Life passions, all that jazz."

He nodded, finally stopping at a local coffee shop. Being a gentleman opened the door for her. "After you."

She blushed slightly, these gestures always made her feel like a centre of attention. "Oh, um thanks." He chuckled at her nervousness as they walked to the counter. "Just black coffee please, and you?" He noticed her pulling out her wallet and bent towards her a little too close for comfort, "least I could do is pay for your waiting, just order what you would like."

"Oh thanks, um a coffee two crème, two sugar." She watched the teenage girl put it in the register.

"Oh and a couple of those." He pointed to some fudge brownies, and dug out his wallet to pay. "Trust me, they're absolutely fantastic." He laughed lightly.

"Oh, well let's see about it." She retrieved her coffee from the woman, and the two took a table.

"Well, in regards to your earlier question, yes I'm a surgeon, My life passion is to save people in need, or in emergency, so I'm on call a lot. That is partly why I'm late... There was actually a car accident before I got off so I was a bit stuck performing surgery. again I do apologize." He spoke solemnly glancing out the window.

"We're they all right?"

"Yes, they were fine. Honestly, I'm just glad I can try to save the lives of others now." he breathed a visible sigh of relief.

"Oh yeah, we have similar goals in a sense then, I want to save lives of others, and help families. Right now at least I'm fortunate to help with the cold case department."

"Have you solved any?"

"Yes actually, two since I started, with a lot of guidance though, so I'm not one to take the credit."

"Still good though, you helped solve it regardless, give yourself more credit one day and maybe you'll be the next L"

She burst out laughing at his words, "uh... Yeah, that will never happen."

"Just boost your confidence, put a goal in mind, as long as you set one and aim for it, there's a pretty high chance you'll succeed with it." This Mr. Kado actually wasn't that bad. Now that the mood had started to ease, she wasn't uncomfortable any more.

"Thanks, actually that is a boost in confidence on its own. I should keep that in mind."

They continued to converse during the night, up until the point that the shop closed at left them outside. Kado pulled out a piece of paper in attempt to exchange contact information, to her own surprise she accepted. He wasn't as bad as she originally thought, he even offered to hail a taxi for her but she refused. She had things to do.

"L.A.P.D. morgue..." The voice suddenly broke out into a loud yawn. "This is Camny speaking."

"Seriously go home, it's Friday!"

"Oh Nair? Are you seriously at a payphone at this hour at the night."

"Yep, actually calling to make sure you were still at work, shall I meet with you?"

"Hm, oh yeah. I could really go for a pizza actually. I'll pack up here, where are you exactly?"

She looked around the area and told him the street name.

"Alright I shall see you soon."

Click. She put the phone into the receiver. Then quietly stood by the payphone, watching the empty road. Glancing at her watch, 10:17pm.

A man walked around the corner a distance off, slowly walking. He looked homeless, slightly bundled. He was also hacking a bit so she took a step back to make way for him. Staring at his hand that tightly gripped his arm as he walked. His knuckles were white with the force of that grip. "Um hey? Are you alright?"

He stopped walking, and let out a shiver. "I'll be fine." Those famous last words before he collapsed into the side walk.

"Oh shit!" She was quickly at his side, turning him over, he was still concious and she was immediatly back on that payphone dialling for an ambulance.

"Nair?" She hadn't realized Camny pulled up just in the nick of time with his small car, and instantly began pointing at the man who began to violently shake. He quickly pulled the man into a feudal position once again as he fell out of it.

"911 emergency-"

"I need an ambulance, I'm between orangethorpe Ave and beach blvd, right near that intersection, a man is having a seizure." She watched the red head continue to try and get the man in the feudal potion, but his hand wasn't letting go of his arm. He was almost unresponsive.

"Come on sir please! I need to get your hand off." It was no use. Within five minutes he stopped moving, his hand released his shirt, but neither saw anything out of the ordinary there. When he checked the pulse, Camny froze. "He's dead."

"What?" She dropped the phone, she had never seen this sort of thing happen before. She was dead silent as Camny ripped the mans sleeve to see what he was gripping exactly. A slight shock had rippled through them both as they looked at a dark Bruise. The veins in the one particular spot were black. It was a very unusual wound.

"The hell?" he muttered as her blue and his hazel eyes made contact. "Nair, this was no accident, ask them to send police."

"R-Right." She stuttered, retrieving the phone once again. "I'm sorry, but I think we might have a homicide."

Let me know what you think, I promise L will show up soon enough :)
