Solitary Confinement
By Unknowner
"LET ME OUT OF HEEERE!" Zim's fists flailed against the side of his cell, to no avail. He sighed deeply,
slumping against the concrete. He'd been found out,the armada was coming... and his mission was a sham.
He absentmindedly scratched his back, where once the tool-pak had been. His captors had confiscated it,
of course. It didn't matter much. The whole complex would be a crater in about twelve minutes.
"Zim? Is that you?" He heard a faint voice filtering in from an air vent. An oddly familiar one, at that.
"Tak? They caught you, too?" A muttered Irken curse.
"Yes. And don't ask how."
"Tak..."
"Okay... they trailed MiMi home. What about you? Did they finally see through your pitiful disguise?"
"Actually, the Dib human captured me. It was a pretty clever trap, all things considered." Silence.
"Not as clever as the trap the tallest set."
"I know. What better way to remove two potential threats to the empire than to pit them against each other?"
"...over a pitiful planet such as the Earth, nonetheless." Zim stared at the ceiling.
"Perfect pawns in a twisted game. Did you ever think it would end like this, Tak?"
"More or less. But with another armada blasting me into component atoms... and me in command of a ship, instead of a
captive in a crude barred cave."
"Yeah. Pretty much the same here. I think they condition us to expect that during incubation." Zim supressed a shudder,
remembering the eerie sight of the irken birthing chambers.
"I guess so. They really do a splendid brainwashing job, don't they, Zim?"
"Mm-hmm." Silence for a few minutes. "You know, Tak? If not for that little incident all those years ago... we'd
probably be pretty much the same."
"Two overzealous invaders, condemned to hideous suicide missions of doom?" Tak paused, as if mulling that statement
over. "Maybe. But I'd probably have gotten at least one planet under my belt." Zim chuckled. Right on time, the
fiery rain of ion fire spewed from the heavens, charring the earth.
"I'll see you on the other side... Tak..." Zim fell silent as the walls of the prison structure boiled away under the
barrage, allowing him one last glimpse at his rival... one more kindred in spirit than he had thought. There was a
great, pestilent, boiling light, married with a terrible, indescribable noise, followed by a great horrible silence.
