THE RETURN FROM AVALON
"I missed you."
It was only a whisper. If she choose not to hear it, then she could just keep walking away. But those words made her stop. Elisa couldn't ignore this anymore.
The New York cop had been through a lot over the past two months. Her and her two friends, Goliath and Bronx, had been traveling around the world. Along the way they met and traveled with another gargoyle named Angela. Fulfilling quest after quest, helping those who needed help, the quartet grew close in their travels.
Maybe too close. Elisa gripped her arms, holding them close to her chest.
It had been a week since they returned. Elisa had to do some damage control at the station, and was not able to see her friends.
That's a lie, Maza. You just didn't want to see him after rejecting him. And he sounds so... hurt.
"Elisa." Goliath took one step close to her. "I know our last meeting was... I do not know how to describe it. But I did not mean for you to become distant."
"Goliath... I know." Elisa turned to look at her lavender friend. "But we're back in Manhattan now. Things have to go back to normal. Things... feelings... must be held back."
Goliath was silent for a moment. He knew she spoke the truth, he just didn't want to accept it. "I understand. It would be selfish to want more than what we have."
Elisa's eyes were downcast. "What do we have?"
Goliath rested a claw on her shoulder. "Friendship. We have nothing more... but the best friendship."
Elisa took one step closer. "I like that." Her arms itched to wrap around the gargantuan. "You do mean a lot to me, Goliath."
The gargoyle gave a slight nod of his head. "You mean a lot to me as well. But we should not let mere awkwardness keep us apart. As they say, don't be a stranger."
Elisa gave him a small laugh. "Alright. I won't."
With that, the young woman left. The large gargoyle watched her leave with a smile on his face that betrayed what he felt inside.
"If only we could be something else." He said softly.
The gargoyle turned and leaned against the parapets, looking out at the city below.
