The Loudest Voice
There are times when silence has the loudest voice.
(Leroy Brownlow)
Sometimes, Eli thinks back - remembers. He tries not to, but it's not like he has that much control over his memories, so it doesn't always work.
He thinks back to when he didn't talk. How it had taken two weeks for somebody to even notice it. How his father had been the last one to know. How he hadn't been interested, even then.
He thinks back to how the student counselor had tried to find out what had made him stop talking.
How there had never been a reason.
He thinks about how he started talking again, sometime after his third appointment with that fancy shrink his father had arranged for, how his parents had taken it for granted, that everything would go back to normal after that.
He tries not to think about how he still doesn't talk, not about the really important things. How he likes to keep spouting random things, but nothing of importance.
He does, however, think about the fact that Lightman, Gillian, and probably even Ria should be able to pick up on it. How it's the little things that should give him away.
They don't.
Back when he had decided on radical honesty, he had thought that it would make people more aware of what he said, but it didn't.
He had thought that they would ask the right questions, the important questions. He would have answered honestly. They didn't. Still don't.
In fact, it seems as if he is ignored even more now.
He thinks that talking is overrated anyway – so he stops.
And it takes over two weeks until people at work begin to notice.
