When she called to say she was going to be in town for a few days, he seemed distant and noncommittal but she thought that was just a result of the trans-Atlantic telephone connection and the busy schedule of a lawyer.
When she called this morning to confirm that he was free for lunch, she got his new assistant, Laurie, on the phone. Laurie told her that he didn't have anything on his calendar but wouldn't confirm that he was free for lunch. Laurie explained that most days, he worked through lunch so that he could actually make it home for dinner. Getting home for dinner didn't sound right to her, but she figured Laurie was new, she didn't know what she was talking about.
When she got off the elevator and walked to his office, it was to find another attorney sitting behind the desk. She had to backtrack and confirm that the firm was still called Lockhart/Gardner. It was.
When she went back to the office formerly known as Will's, she found an assistant sitting outside at the desk, but she was not named Laurie, she was Marie. Marie explained that the office had recently expanded and that Mr. Gardner now sat on the 31st floor.
When she stepped off the elevator on the 31st floor, she was met with a more modern type of décor, with the poignant aroma of fresh flowers and the low hum of people at work. The receptionist, Paula, was the same as the one who worked here the last time she visited, but Paula didn't seem to remember her. Paula explained that all unannounced visitors for Mr. Gardner needed to go through Laurie and that Laurie needed to be informed of her arrival. After Paula failed to get Laurie on the phone, she stomped off looking for Will's office despite Paula's protest. Surely, she thought, she wasn't an unannounced visitor and shouldn't have to wait this long to see him.
When she found the executive suite of offices, the glass doors and walls were not clear like the old offices. The glass here was frosted, so she could see people inside the offices but could not recognize who was in there. One office appeared to have at least two people; the other office seemed to only hold one person. When she started walking in the direction of the sole occupant office, because surely Will knew she was coming today, the other office door opened and out came a laughing, flushed, Alicia. She looked different, her hair was a slightly lighter shade with bangs, her skirt was slightly shorter, her heels were slightly higher, and when Alicia had lightly slapped Will on the shoulder with her left hand, she noticed that Alicia's ring finger was now bare.
"Tammy, how are you?" Alicia asked when she noticed Tammy standing outside Will's door.
"Good, thanks," Tammy replied while breezing past Alicia, entering Will's office, and closing the door behind her.
"I hate your new office."
"It's good to see you too Tammy. Did we have an appointment?"
"Did we have an appointment? How dare you? After everything?"
"Excuse me, you come barging in here without an appointment and . . ."
"How could you not call?"
"You said I shouldn't, you said that we weren't doing the long distance thing, you said that . . ."
"I know what I said; I was just hoping you wouldn't listen."
"Listen Tammy, there's a reason I didn't phone. You told me not to fall in love with you."
"Right, because the entire time you were in love with her."
"Yes."
"So you're not even going to try to deny it?"
"No, I love her and I'm sorry that I hurt you. That was never my intention."
"Fuck you," Tammy yelled as she stormed out of Will's office.
"Fuck you," Tammy spat when she saw Alicia standing by the elevator.
"Fuck me," Tammy sighed once she was in the elevator, trying with all her might not to cry over a man who never promised to love her.
