It All Started as a Joke…

This is based on a joke me and my friend had when we were drawing Gruffen's eye. When I was reaching for the purple pencil, I accidentally grabbed the highlighter… and it only escalated from there.
This happens sometime in between Icefire and Fire Star,

…and my friend at school, Kelly, drew Gruffen with highlighter yellow eyes! She told me that they were in 'laser mode'. Then she drew bright red beams coming out! It was so funny! When I told Gruffen, he got really daydream-y. I think he wants laser mode.
Hey, can you write a story about that?
Love, Lucy
(And Mom, Bonnington, Gadzooks, Gretel, and the rest)

David smiled. That sounded hilarious! Maybe he should write a small story. He had inspiration, too, surprisingly.
So he picked up a pen and started to write…

Gruffen woke up from his dream, stretching his wings. Another day of guard duty ahead, and maybe he'd get to flirt with Gretel a bit…
He quickly shook that thought off. However pretty the potions dragon was, she had only become slightly less intimidating and commandeering.
He flew up into the office.
Now, Gruffen usually slept guarding Lucy. But, by accident, he was staying up late last night and therefor fell asleep in the kitchen, missing his strawberry-blonde 'alarm clock'.
So he had no idea a kilning was going on.
So he flew in the middle of the kilning.

David sat back, happy with his work so far. Now, he thought, I should start with my work.

Gruffen woke up, blinking. Something was wrong. He felt weird.
Oh yeah, I flew into a kilning! He realized. Of course I feel weird.
But what was different?
Wings working; check.
Legs; check.
Neck; check.
Fire; check.
What was wrong?
He glared at the spare piece of paper on the desk, as if it was somehow it's fault.
Then, to his surprise, a red flash lit his gaze, and where the paper had previously been, there was a blackened spot.
Blinking, he thought, what was that?
He took out another piece of paper, andtried staring hard at it. Another red flash, but this time? The paper was blackened.
Another paper. This time, he glared hard at it, willing another bright flash to come out.
No more paper. He grinned evilly and turned around…
… to see a wide-eyed Liz in the doorway.

After a bit of explaining, she came to the conclusion that? Because she had set him to the side to recuperate after the accident, she had missed the development of the 'laser eyes'. Apparently, a small beam of light shot out whenever he wanted it to, and his eyes turned neon yellow for a second.
Liz was disturbed by the sudden, crazy glint in his eyes.
What was he thinking? Oh, if you must know…
Oh, all of the toast to burn… he thought, cackling maniacally…
