Kakashi stood outside the old looking door of a small house on the outskirts of the village. He had stood outside this door many times before - but this time, it was different. He was no longer the troubled teen full of indifference, but a young man willing to take a chance if still offered.
His hand slowly reaches up to knock on the door, but hesitates. The last time he knocked on this door, it was to tell the most important person to him that he was leaving to join ANBU and would be gone for a while.
3 years...
He remembered the looked he received, and the punch he got after. he slowly lowers his hand. Perhaps, he should wait until the morning. It was after all late at night - or early in the morning, depending on which way you wished to look at it.
'Promise me'. Those words still echo in his mind as he stares uncertainly at the weather beaten door. He promised he would come back alive. He promised he would come straight back to the house. He promised he would come if his heart felt the same.
The sudden opening of the door catches him off guard and he is momentarily blinded by the light that suddenly floods out into the shadowed filled night. It doesn't take long for his eyes to adjust though the ANBU mask still adorning his face, and focus on the person before him.
"Welcome home." Kakashi blinks. Of course he would be recognised - even in his ANBU attire. This person would know him a mile away. He was after all his friend, his teacher, his Hokage - and maybe something a lot more. "I'm home..." he answers.
He doesn't resist when Minato wraps his arms around him, or when he draws him into the warm welcoming house. Nor does he resist when his masks are removed and he is engaged in a soft, hesitant kiss. He knows what he wants now, although he realised whilst away that probably he had always known.
It is he who guides them both into the back room where the spare bed is, determined to make up for lost time.
