Disclaimer: Sadly enough, I can only claim the rights to my mind and my imagination.

Author's Note: This is yet another creative writing experiment from my class. For the first twenty-ish minutes, we write in our journals after receiving a prompt from our teacher. He asked us to type one up to share, not matter how short or unfinished. The main character's original name is Peter, but once again, I could see Simon in his shoes. I shall also slide in that it takes place in a different time period (der). And on another note, this is my very first non-SimonxJeanette fic that I'm posting on FF! Gasp! Hahaha. Not my best work, or my longest (I actually think it's my shortest; THIS has to be longest Author's Note I've ever typed…), but I hope you enjoy it all the same. But I'll never know your opinion if you don't review. ;)

Of Parchment and Memories

The frivolous parchment laid on the farthest right-hand corner of his desk. Simon was determined not to look at it. He hunched over his papers, reading each article intently. Simon's eyes were seeing the words; his mind, however, was fixated on that ridiculous piece of paper.

Oh, how it taunted him. The seal with the first letter of his last name on it, an elegant "M" pressed into a thick, red wax, seemed to wave at him and say, "Hello! Open me up!"

After a few more minutes of imaginary jeering, Simon gave up and bookmarked his reading. He reached for the scroll of parchment, then laid it in front of him. He smoothed his thumb over the lines left by the metal "M" that had been pressed into the wax while it was hot.

When Simon was little, he had stumbled upon his father sealing documents in his study. Simon, being the curious little bright-eyed child that he was, had asked his father to show him how to make the seal. With a never-ending reserve of patience, Simon's father had taught him the art of creating a seal, and even allowed Simon to help him finish sealing the documents.

Simon shook the memory from his now older, graying eyes, but the same boyish smile remained on his lips as he carefully pulled back the seal and began reading his father's will.
