Written to fill this prompt: Joanna keeps a video of her father singing a lullaby to her when she was a baby, for the nights when she is upset.
The song is by Billy Joel
Lying on her bed on her belly, her chin propped up on her hand, Joanna watched the holovid intently, staring at the image. The sound was low becasue she was supposed to be sleeping, but she didn't mind. She could be really quiet and still hear.
"Jocelyn...can you please turn that thing off?" She'd watched it so many times she knew all the lines by heart and whispered them as they were spoken.
"Nah...you're cute when you're embarrassed." Joanna giggled as her daddy rolled his eyes, a smile on his face. The image went shaky for a moment while her mother, shifted and refocused the recorder. Her daddy was rocking in a chair and cradling a pink bundle in his arms. There was a cry and suddenly a little fist was thrust up towards his chin.
"She's waking up," her mama said in a whisper. Daddy didn't answer, but looked down at the baby Joanna and used his free hand to draw a finger gently down her face, over her nose. Joanna mirrored his movements on herself, closing her eyes, and remembering all the times he'd done that while putting her to bed. Glancing at her door, Joanna turned the sound up a little. She loved this part.
"Goodnight my angel, now it's time to sleep..." Her daddy sang the song to baby Joanna softly, his voice low and a little scratchy. He was her favorite singer to listen to. "...I promised I would never leave you, and you should always know wherever you may go, no matter where you are, I never will be far away." Joanna's eyes filled with tears and she wiped them away quickly. Only babies cried, and she was a big girl. "...And like a boat out on the ocean I'm rocking you to sleep. The water's dark and deep inside this ancient heart you'll always be a part of me..."
"I love you, my sweet baby girl," her daddy said to the pink bundle. Joanna closed her eyes and tried to imagine the feel of his hand gently tracing her features and carding through her hair.
"I love you too, Daddy," Joanna whispered. She switched off her holovid and squirmed around in her bed until she was comfortable.
Burying her face in her pillow, she gave in and let herself miss her daddy.
