Unsuspecting Package
"Why is the only woman you've cared about a world class criminal? Are you a masochist?"
Watson looked closely at Holmes, whether he denied it time and time again, he did have a certain sort of fondness with Irene Adler. After all she was the female equivalent of the great Sherlock Holmes despite what the man thought.
The same style of wit and charm bundled up in a unsuspecting package. Glancing at outward beauty of Irene Adler no one would conclude that a criminal was just under the surface. Just was the same with Holmes, with his handsome exterior and certain eccentricities people outside the local area had a difficult time trusting the man to do his job.
Her delightful American accent hypnotised men everywhere, so Holmes being caught in her spell wasn't an extremely surprising but still shocking enough to see that he was spellbound in the first place.
She had a trail of husbands that she had cheated, stolen money off and defrauded.
That fact that she was thief should of put a restrictive ban on Holmes's rising interest in her but it only increased both his curiosity and inquisitiveness about Irene Adler.
Watson guessed Holmes was slightly masochist, after all the times Irene Adler had double crossed Holmes, he still had odd fascination with her. Mainly because he was so good at seeing deception. But Adler had broken through his intellectual capabilities on the matter continually attracting Holmes even further.
The only woman who could successful trick Holmes and escape.
The only woman who could charmed her way into Holmes mind.
The only woman who Holmes was entranced by.
The only woman who Holmes couldn't work out.
The matter frustrated him. Anyone could see that. Holmes was brilliant at separating his feelings and facts...but Irene was better.
It was a bit of a inconvenience that Irene Adler was a world class criminal. One of the very best.
Watson sometimes thought that Holmes let her escape on purpose, it was a theory. Watson smiled, he completely discarded what Holmes had told him:
'Never theorise before you have data. Invariably, you end up twisting facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts.'
But he did have indirect evidence. Holmes always watched her leave, and Watson had caught a slight nod in Holmes direction from Irene Adler. Or the fact he awaited her arrival by collecting random newspaper articles in turned out to be somehow related to Miss. Adler.
Watson didn't catch on till much later but he pretends not to be aware. It serves to be more interesting when they actually met.
Watson personally had the impression that both Holmes and Irene Adler enjoyed the cat and mouse game between them.
It was only a matter of time before one of them slipped up and revealed some type of feeling towards each other...but both were extremely tenacious, strong-willed...and for lack of a better word stubborn.
